Turning '91 into pulling truck

I have a stock '91 reg cab long bed 2wd auto. I am wanting to turn it into a 2wd pulling truck. Stock Cummins engine runs great.
The questions i have are:

What mods can I do to the engine to get the most power with the VE pump?

How much HP and Torque will the tranny hold with some mods? Or would it be better to convert to a standard shift.

If going standard shift. What is trans will be best to put in?

I am going to put in a 2 spd rear axle out of a old Ford truck and mount it soild to the frame (no rear springs).

I haven't seen many 2wd diesel pulling trucks and have been wanting to build one for awhile. To much to tear up on a 4x4 pulling truck.

Thanks for all suggestions and input.
Andy
