Post Turbo Survey (Sort of)

If anyone (including me ) was in the market to compare turbos, what would you say to these?

21 cm "LagMaster"
18 cm
16 cm
14 cm
12 cm

Wastegated vs non-wastgated
stage III
stage IV

What are the strengths (spool time) and weaknesses (high EGTs) of these turbos. Thanks Y'all in advance!

18 cm Spools OK on an automatic or with plenty of fuel on a stick truck. Good top end.
16 cm Good all-around housing, but if you have an 18 don't spend the money.
14 cm Too small if not wastegated, too expensive if wastegated. Not worth the money - and I should know because I have one.
12 cm Do not get a non-wastegated one. Buy wastegated only. On a stock or nearly stock truck with a stick this housing rocks! Automatics can't take real good advantage of the spool-up. If you drive ludicrous speed all the time, mpg will go down a little.

Wastegated vs non-wastgated Only the 12 and 14 cm units are available with a wastegate. See my opinions above.
stage III Nice! Will keep stock injectors and a tweaked pump reasonably cool. You won't notice much spoolup change. Sounds great.
stage IV Nicer! Ain't enough for POD's, though. Sounds absolutely awesome.

Something in the HTB2 family.

Talking Lagmaster 21? JMO

I have always read about the 21 being sooooooo bad. Now I haven't rode in another first gen but I don't think that my 21 is that bad. It is plenty responsive on the highway and even around town I never find myself waiting for it. No this isn't the only turbodiesel I've driven. I've driven a 96 with a torque plate and injectors with a 5 speed and a 98 with a torque plate, automatic and the wastegate blocked off (surged real bad). To be honest, I thought that the 12 cm would spool alot better than it did. I found myself waiting for the 12 cm almost as much as mine. When it came on it did alot more than my truck but it lagged none the less. Now granted, the 21 is too big but the 12 is certainly too small and provides for alot of exhaust restriction. And, on a stock truck, if I had to have a mis-sized turbo I would definitely error on the side of too big than too small.

So the point of all my rambling is that ve pump adjustments seem to make a world of difference when it comes to spool time. The AFC trys to limit fuel until boost is present but the fuel is necessary to make the boost so its kind of a catch 22. So while other guys may hate the 21 I don't really mind it that much and guys should really play with pump settings and they might be surprised. I will be replacing this turbo when I get injectors but my preference is always going to be towards sacrificing some spool up for more performance.

If you had a manual trans you would hate that 21 cm.

I didn't like it on mine. That was the first thing I did, 16cm housing. Then shortly thereafter the 3200 spring. I also turned the fuel pin while I was in there doing the spring. The difference in that one week's time after I'd only had the ruck for about a month was like night and day. No kidding.

True, with an auto you really only have to spool it once.

I still think that spool up time is overrated though. It certainly wouldn't be my top priority when it comes to turbo selection. With things like oiling modifications to help longevity, balancing, boost air temperature and efficiency range, there's more important things to consider IMO. The quickest spooling isn't always the best.
