So would the best bet for a 92 w350 with a 5spd that needs to remain a solid towing/daily driver be best suited with the 16cm. Also can you just change the "hot side" of the housing and still use the compressor. This may be redundant, but I am just trying to get a good understanding.

I have the impression there are so many possible combinations of turbos, housings, trannys, injectors, intakes and exhausts along with the corresponding different uses (towing, play, driver, whatever) that at some point soon after you leave the OEM/stock configuration you're into roll-your-own land. That's why I asked a random "what if...?" question on a different turbo thread earlier today.

I'd like to see some sort of guide, broken down by say budget along the application lines like I mentioned above. What's a good suggested equipment combo for these categories:

Cost-conscious Cost not a factor

auto/stick

Towing: _________/____________ __________/___________
Driver: ___________/__________ ____________/_________
Play: _____________/________ ______________/_________

Fill in the blanks, turbo gurus: 12 different highly targeted turbo equipment combos -turbo, housing and appropriate injectors. Dream on!!

Now this is information that will indeed come in handy. I for one could use this information myself. Later, Tony

I think for a 5 speed daily driver on a budget it is quite cost and time effective to find a good used hx35-12wg off a newer truck. The trick is finding one under $300. I wouldn't spend any more than that. Plus it's pretty much a direct bolt on, depending on what style WG is on the turbo. I am very pleased with the results for the money spent on the truck so far. I cannot speak for the other categories...I don't tow anything and I'm too poor to use my truck for play.

would the money be better spent on a HTT Stage III/IV, bigger injectors, or a smaller housing? If I, say maybe 3 yrs from now, were to retire this truck as a puller, what would I have to do? where would my money be best spent? I'm guessing here the list is limitless. Thanks,

dieseljon

If you can find a good HX-35 for the right price, by all means jump on it.

The truck will be a respectable puller with the stock injectors, some pump tweaking, and an HTT compressor kit on the turbo to help keep the EGT down.

Later when you go nuts you can just get a bigger turbo or use the hybrid for the top turbo on a set of twins.

Good question. A wastegate allows a portion of the exhaust to bypass the turbine and go directly into the downpipe. Bleeding off some of the exhaust lowers the amount of power available to drive the compressor, so boost drops. The wastegate actuator controls the wastegate, it opens the wastegate when boost goes higher than it should, and closes the wastegate when boost drops to where it should be.

Since we are on the subject of different turbos....and I just trashed my H1C...

Is there any other turbo brand that will fit without having to modify the exhaust or BHAF?

Thanks,
Earl

I'll throw in my 2 cents here. Last summer I ditched my H1C for a used HX-35 from a 98 12V (I actually got it from a guy on DTR!). If you have a 5 speed truck I HIGHLY reccommend that you do this swap if you plan on staying somewhat conservative with mods. Its so nice to have near-instant boost on the highway. My highway mpg did go down a bit but its not super drastic (maybe 1-2 mpg).

Unfortunately for me I have some plans for my truck once I get the funds. Bombs will include:
-DDP stage III injectors
-Piston lift pump
-3200rpm governor spring
Now I realize that after I get all of the above done, things will probably get toasty with the HX-35. Good thing I hung onto my H1C so if the EGTs turn thermonuclear, I have a temporary fix. I will eventually pick up a turbo better suited to my setup. Something that'll keep the EGTs in check and reasonable amounts of boost (40 psi or less)

Sigh, this is one slippery slope

Sorry about that, I have an '03 Ford intercooler. I do need to find a cheap set of sticks...say a set of 40hp or 80hp if anyone has a cheap set lying around..

The turbo was $350usd+shipping. And it was the complete turbo, the only thing I've done to it is pull the silencer ring

Look around here in the 2nd gen classifieds. There is usually a few guys getting rid of their hx-35s to upgrade to something else.
