Tryin to learn about 1st gens

OK a buddy of mine just bought a 1990 model 4x4 regular cab flat bed cummins with no leaks, a 3-speed auto and it turns 3400 RPM's and can hit a little over 20 pounds of boost. He's asking me for advise but I don't know anything about them so I thought I'd ask for some advise. He wants to crank it up to about the power of a stock commonrail and will pull vehicles around occasionally.

Transmission shifts like a dream and was supposed to have just been rebuilt.

It's not intercooled. Can it be?

He's planning on a fuel system and has a Glacier system off an '06. Will this work?

What else needs to be done? Turbo? Injectors?

It can be intercooled with some fabrication. Banks used to make a kit, but they no longer bother with these old trucks.

He can put the Glacier system on the truck, but the mechanical lift pump on these trucks is pretty trouble free.

He's gonna need more air, but the injectors are fine for his goal.

Is the intercooler needed? or wanted? He told me that these are known for getting high EGT's on long pulls partially due to no intercooler.

If he wants to make 300 HP and be able to floor it towing, he's going to need an intercooler.

Ebay/craigslist I hear the 7.3 powerstroke intercoolers make a nice upgrade.

To get to the 300 HP level what needs to be done? Turbo? which one? what boost level?

Move the plate? Mess with the timing?

If you want to tow with 300 HP, I'd suggest Schwitzer based turbo, a 60/14 from whatever vendor would do well. The head gasket will hold 45 psi.

No plate, look in the sticky for info on how to mess with the pump. It will need the timing bumped.
