Truck weight

As part of the grueling CA DMV experience I had to have my truck weighed. With the custom bumper and about half a tank of fuel it came out to 5558 Lbs. This is over 1000 Lbs more than the DMV estimated for the truck which puts it in a higher weight classification. This means I have to pay about $75 more for registration.

What do you guys get for the standard Dually truck. Does the engine weight THAT much more than a V-8?

Wish mine was that light. My W250 club cab with custom bumpers, a flatbed, 130 gallons of fuel, and a few tools I weigh in at 8750.

Cummins 12V dry is 1,100 pounds and the gas big blocks vary from 670 to 750 pounds.

Diesel trucks probably have bigger radiators and certainly bigger oil pan capacities so this adds more over all also.

i've had a gasser and my w250 side by side. axles, motor, and frame rails would be the bulk of the weight difference. I think 1100 lbs is an extremely conservative number on the motor. dressed and with fluids i'd guess its 1500+, says my loader spewing hydro fluid when lifting one.

I wish I had weighed the 92 while it was stock and before I had the flatbed put on but the last time I weighed in it was 8850, that was before I swapped to a d80 rear and added a tool box. The bed alone weighs around 2k.

Wow I thought these engines were 1100lbs wet. An unrelated question.. sorry to hijack but I didn't want to start a whole new thread I have my engine on a 2000lb engine stand at the moment with 4 grade 10.9 bolts holding it to an adapter plate. Should I be swapping those out for grade 12.9 bolts? It's been on the stand for 48 hours now with the engine hoist still connected just in case but not supporting any of the weight.

Take it back to the scale when you have a 1/4 tank or less of fuel.

Not sure how much 52lbs (or more) worth of fuel will change the weight fee but at least you could bring it down some.

I went through a little hell when trying to register mine years back. The VIN tag in the door jamb had gone missing at some point so the DMV then required an inspection by CHP to verify matching VIN's on the dash and bottom flange of the passenger frame rail.

Among completing the process, I was asked by the DMV if the truck would ever be over 10,001lbs. I said 'No'. Somewhere along the way, it became a 'Yes' on their end and for about 4 years, they had it in the 14,000lbs weight classification. Which, obviously, had me paying a higher weight fee each year. I forget what prompted me to look into the classifications one year but once I caught it, I immediately raised hell, filled a refund form and got that excess money back.

That's exactly what I had to go through. The Tag is still on the door jamb but all the lettering on it has faded out. So the nice fellow at the DMV inspection had no "second" VIN number to inspect. I guess the one at the corner of the windshield isn't enough. So I had to spend days just getting an appointment at the CHP office, and no you can't try to jump the line and go to another CHP office, then wait the days until the appointment then it took the nice CHP officer about 10 minutes to verify the VIN number. Why is it that this couldn't be done at the DMV? Isn't that what the MV part of DMV stands for, Motor Vehicles? Couldn't the DMV inspector have looked at the frame rail himself? He had overalls on so why couldn't he do it?

The weight classification breaks at 5000 lbs so draining the tank and dropping my custom bumper out of the bed wouldn't have been enough to get below that. The Diesel and Dual wheels on the back adds about a 1000 lbs to what the DMV had for the base weight of the truck which is 4500 lbs.

My crewcab tips the scales at almost 7200lbs....with a full tank of fuel, and no one in the drivers seat. Add me and I push it close to 7500lbs!
