truck overheated today, whats the best option?
truck overheated today, whats the best option?
When to retreeve a Jeep cheeroke, for maybe my Next toy in the hilles!!!
On the way back i had to travel over parleys summit. A mountain range i cross often. Had just turned the full power scew 1/2 turn and have power now!!!!
Unforunatly i couldn't us the new found power..,egt were going past 1250* even with the truck geared down, and the eng a reving. And then the temp started climing, i was in 3 and over and half throttle to keep the temp from going past the 2nt mark(first mark past half.usaly sit on the the first mark) on my guage.
when the top of the mountion was close i mashed the throttle down to see what it would do! Got it to pull in forth and over.
took a mile or so of down hill road to cool down enuf so the fan could disingage. Vary happy with the power and don't want to turn the fuel back down, so time to address the heating problems.
First is the cooling system!!!!
Has any of you non intecooled guy, put a intercooled radiator in? How difficult was it, what is req for the swap? did it help that much? dus any one have a fan shroud for the intercooled truck radiator, that would be interested in parting with...How much? PM me if you do!....Is this radiator and shroud the same as the early 2nt gen, has any one fit one of these radiators in?
The egts need to be address but i need to be able to cool the eng before i fab up a intercooler to block off some of the air going to the radiator.
Going to see if i can talk the parts manager at work to order me the fan and clutch for the inter cooled truck and hope that i can return it if it don't fit!!!!
see here for more info on this https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=106390
Any ideas, sugestion's,coment would be grately apprectiated

I also have a non-intercooled truck with the small rad. My local rad shop told me he builds a rad with 2-3/4" dimpled cores. Then he puts the outflow to the top of the rad on the other side. (drivers side). This is a bolt in rad that he says will cure the overheating problem. Has anyone else tried this fix?

I would really like some on to respond to this before me but.......
where are thay at, how much is it $$$$ and can i bolt on my stock fan shroud?!!!

That will take some planning though... The price that he quoted me was $400 for the 2 core and $600 for the three core. Both rads would bolt right in, and would use the stock fan shroud. Lots of money, but cheaper than engine work.
Yes!!! still looking in for ether avanuse, but i like this idea
extra coolant
In pulling the GN with a load mine runs real hot on a hill so I was wondering if you could use an additional pressureised tank to hold like 5 gal. of extra coolant hooked up to the heater hoses and an electric pump to circulate it. Even in third gear on a long hill it could hit 220* if I didn't watch it.

Ya thats what i worry about, kas your's is intercooled w/the biger radiator,
I would hate to spend the $$$ for the bigger radiator(intercooled trucks)and fined the problem is still there

Several guys have put the intercooled radiator in. There's some light fabrication involved in mounting it, but it fits without major hacking. Try searching around some for the old threads on this, if you turn up a good one I'll put it in the sticky.
what do you mean it took a while of downhill before your fan kicked out, my fan is always on, do ytou have an electric fan? I always hear my fan it is loud, it always sounded like a 747 on takeoff at high idle in the parking lot @ 2500 rpms.

ya when it cools to normal temp the fan turns back into a disinguate mode....sounds like yours is brocken in the full locked mode
Edit: mine is a stock viscous clutch.(one year old.....Maybe it has been allmost 2 years now!
this is all i have found so far but is an interesting fix to are problem

that artical made a lot of sence to me, if the water is only fowing thru half the the radiator due to inlets and outlet being on the same side. With a down flow radiator like ours(non intercooled) you could basicly have no, or little flow on half of the radiator!
I just half to say:"what a stuped idea"
If we were to have these mod done with a new,and maybe extra core installed, there had ot to be a large cooling increase in cooling and still keep are factory shroud
one thing that i hadn't mention before but when the coolent whent up to the hi side was when the fan clutch let go or stopped pulling air half way up the mountan, this only lasted for problly 30 sec but it was enuff to get it hot enuff that it wouldn't cool down at all tell the bottom of the mountain!
If half of the fan was receving cool or evan cold air, than the clutch would release thinking that the radiater was cool

With the lower hose on the opposite side of the radiator, the coolant has to flow all the way,and at the same speed.(upper radiator hose in the stock, passanger side, and the lower hose outlet is moved to the drivers side!!)
bikeboy1713. how do you plan to hook the lower, drivers side outlet back to the passanger side of the block where the pipe is?.........Going to out and look at my tuck allso
If you didn't want to have to modify any thing, and just bolt it back in, this on would be better!

I just haven't desided witch would be better and ether way you would have to talk a radiator shop in to doing this for you!
I still have the 91.5-93 fan and fan clutch ordered, and it will be here monday but i just don't think it will work

I think that the 91.5-93 radiator would only work if you allready have the shroud for it....witch i don't have and i thing that i would try to put the 2nt gen one in first. I'm not even going to think that fare yet tho got to experiment with the above thouts first
