Transmission trouble

Noticed a grinding or howling noise. Found it is only when the transmission is in overdrive. Seems to be rapidly getting worse.

1993 stock transmission 3 sp + OD.

Bands are good. Transmission serviced about 15K ago.

Because everything works, except it's noisy in OD, I suspect the OD thrust bearing.

I'm thinking of dumping the problem on Kole Johnson in Bufalo, MN. Heard good words about his work. Anybody have any input.

Goerend says he does a lot of Allison work with Goerend stuff. Kole says he has some official Chrysler time under his belt.

This could be a blessing in disguise. "Honey, it has to be fixed."

Sounds like the overdrive gear set. It's likely a straight cut gear set and they are known for being noisy when they have a bunch of miles on them. Is it noisier at a certain speed? Most have a "sweet" spot so to speak were it makes more noise.

If it's getting really noisy you'll have to at the very least pull the overdrive section and have it gone through.

I know what a gear whine sounds like. This is more of a grinding. It was preceded by a steady tone at speed, almost like a wind whistle.

The transmixer probably has 200K on it. It's been doing good, but it probably could use a refresh. I'm also increasing the pull expected from the truck. I think it's time to have it gone through and beefed up to meet the task. I'd rather pour some money into it under controlled conditions than have it fail far from home. It also gives me oportunity to swap out the flex plate, upgrade the torque converter if is is stock, and check the crankshaft thrust bearing.

Talked to Kole Johnson in Buffalo, MN. A friend recommended him. He said when the OD starts to go, it'll contaminate and mess up the whole transmission. I had planned to drive it to him (about 50 miles) keeping it out of OD, but changed my mind and hired a beaver tail rig to haul it.

Last night I moved the truck a few feet so I could PM the engine. It took about 10 seconds for the transmission to get going, so the valve body is already fuddled up.

Oh well, looks like I might as well have Kole build it up proper so this doesn't happen again any time soon.

Sure glad it happened at home. I have a trip to the left coast coming up pretty soon.

Got word from Kole on my baby. OD gears crashed and poluted the whole transmission. It'll cost me 2-3G to fix it right.

Fix it right means new flex plate, new Goerend converter, new straight cut OD gears, HD OD clutch spring, Transgo shift kit, and a bunch of other critical high strength parts. Should be good to go for the work I plan for it.

Note to self. Put in a 3K governor spring so hills can be pulled in third.

How much to get a mild build 47? If I were gonna drop that much coin I think I would do a little more and have lock up and more options for "performance" upgrades. But that's just me. I know they pop up on compd from time to time with mild builds. I've also read some dudes going with a 4l80e, but I have no idea what would be involved with that swap.

Go to: https://www.wittrans.com/default.aspx?

Select A518 and drill down part number 770. Looks like around $90 ~ $160.

Thanks,
I called them and got a bunch of questions I couldn't answer because my truck is 50 miles away.
Speedometer?
Sensor?
Governor?
Flat or stepped mount? .... stepped

Tranny guy is also away from the metal at the moment.

Kole Called WIT and ordered it. about 86 bucks. One of the variables was the center bearing diameter. He made sure both possibilities were in stock at WIT, then beat the guts out of the housing. He said the spun bearing had pretty well wrecked the housing anyway.

All the parts are coming now. Really lucked out on the torque converter. Thought we'd have to use something else, but Dave Goerend had just built the best converter I could get for another customer, who then backed out of the deal. We got it. WooHoo low stall, and lifetime warranty to boot.

Tranny will be built for about 400 HP. I plan to run 300 or less. Should outlast me, I hope.

Easier to operate OD controls (Combo Exhaust brake,/OD switch) should help the longevity of the beast.

Dang, mine must be a weird duck.
No speedometer
sensor
governor

Can't find one.

On close inspection, the OD planetary is fine. Bearing jammed and turned in the housing. Unbelievable carnage.
