The grab and release could be torque converter, could be clutches in tranny...Maybe in need of a band adjustment?

since my problem is in mainly 1st gear would I adjust the kickdown bands or the low/reverse bands? the kickdown band adjustment is on the side of the tranny near the throttle lever right? Thanks

The low/reverse band is not applied in D or 2 first, only in L first (and Reverse, obviously).

The kickdown band is what engages second gear.

Just to be sure, check that the TV cable moves freely. Not just by working the throttle, actually move it by hand to see if it's sticking.

On that note, it seems I've read that the earlier 1st gens only had a throttle return spring. Perhaps the later 1st gens had the throttle AND a return spring on the TV cable as well. I think it was to fix what you're seeing . . . . . maybe.

Anybody know any better about that?

They all came with a tensioning spring on the TV cable to keep it snugged up. I think that spring confuses a lot of people. When the linkage gets taken apart for one reason or another, by the time it gets put back together they have forgotten where the spring goes - so it doesn't get put back. I run across a couple trucks a year like that.
