Transmission options

It appears that the 46rh in my 93 D350 is clapped out. I have no OD and there was alot of metsl in the pan. I've tested everything and I believe the OD is just shot. My question is this. Is a 47rh conversion worth the extra work/money or is the 46rh worth rebuilding and just adding a good converter? The 47 swap seems like a pain when this truck is only going to be slightly modded and a daily driver/boat puller. Im leaning toward a rebuild on the 46 and a good converter.

I say go with the 47rh. Makes it nice to be able to put power to the ground and not build trans heat.

Did it make some noise? Mine did the same thing. There's a radial bearing in the OD with a ton of thrust load on it. Tranny guy says they don't fail often, but when they do........

I had the 46RH rebuilt with a heavy duty kit, Transgo shift kit, and many other better parts, and a Goerend low stall converter. Drives beautiful.
Here's what the bearing looked like, and the truck's current duty call.

Be sure all the metal is flushed out of the cooler lines. Might as well get a decent converter, yers is full of metal.

It hasnt made a noise. I just bought it.The od didnt work, no charging, no cruise, no ac so I figured it all to be cps or pcm. I put a cps in and got ac, cruise and charging back but no od. It would sometimes shift into od but with any throttlevwould fall out. I checked all wiring issues. When I dropped the pan it was full of metal.....lots of metal. Im leaning toward a rebuild and converter.

Yes. And for giggles i wired up a POT. I also put in an OD solenoid when I did the service this weekend along with band and pressure adjustments. First 3gears feel great but it doesnt go into OD at all. I even jumped a ground to the solenoid and manually sent it to ground in the cab and git nothing. Its very frustrating.

That's because your OD is in the pan.

As I said, complete overhaul, with some upgrade parts. Be sure all the cooling lines are flushed clean of debris. Yer TQ is toast, shot full of filings.

A dollar to a doughnut says most of the silver in the pan used to be the OD shaft/thrust bearing.

I agree. Is there a recommended overhaul kit to use?

I don't know for sure just what went into mine. I had to get the serial number off the TQ and talk to Dave Goerend to find out exactly which one I have.

TQ, I'd go Goerend. Call them with your application and they'll spec exactly what you need.

Transgo shift kit.

Upgraded bands, and some actuator parts.
Better clutches, steels, etc.

Bearings as needed, probably most of em.

If yer going nuts on torque, billet shafts, etc.

How much money you got?

If the OD bearing spun in the housing, you'll need a new tail housing. Should be fairly easy to find used. For bucks you can buy one professionally cleaned and inspected from Goerend.
