tranny shifts differnetly

so we were wokring on my buddies 92 250, adjust ing the pump and what not. it idled high so we ended up having to adjust the linkage to get it down. after doing that it just wouldnt rev as high. Figuring there was something wrong since adjust the linkage would allow it to not rev as high, i inspected several things. I found the throttle cable had a bout 1/4 in play right at the foot pedal. I fixed the play which now allows the pump to open up all the way and still idle decently. My question is the truck now shifts much differently and im not sure it is right. I would expect it to since before the pump would never open up all the way with the extra play in the cable, and since we adjusted the the pump to run stronger. THe tranny seems to stay in gear an awful long time before shifting gears. IMO it should shift sooner. It seems it goes up to the the max rpm, stays there a bit and then shifts. It just doesnt seem right so thats why i am asking. Any suggestions or ideas? thanks

Simple, adjust the tv cable to make it shift sooner!
