Tranny question?

Hello all I have a chance to pick up a 92 250 4*4 reg cab with 200K on the clock for $2000.00 but the tranny is gone out on it. What kind of tranny's do the 1st gens use? Can you buy them in salvage yards or best just to get it rebuilt? Thanks for any advice.

5 speeds use the Getrag G360. Early (non intercooled, 89-91) auto trucks use a 3 speed 727 while the later model (intercooled, 91.5-93) use an OD version of the 727, the A518.

Although not given much credit, the 518 can be a stout tranny with work. They are very popular with drag racing and consequently there are many upgrade parts for them and the cost isn't outrageous. I bought mine with tranny out and I had it rebuilt by a guy I know that does trannies for cash. He used kevlar clutched and upgraded solid bands and it works great. I also adjusted my kickdown cable to max out it's stroke when you floor it. Have someone get in and floor the pedal keep adjusting until it pushes the lever on the tranny all the way. Shift kits are readily available and cheap. The TC is the real weak link because that's where the excess heat comes from that kills everything else. My next purchase will be a converter.

Sorry guys I should of said it is an auto. I'm not 100% for sure on the exact year of the truck I will call the guy up and get more info. The body's kind of rough it's got a really nice flatbed on it and the engine runs really good does $2000.00 sound like a very good deal?

Thanks again,
Justin

Where's the best place to get an auto tranny rebuilt to withstand some power?
