Tranny out. A few questions.
Tranny out. A few questions.
I pulled the trans in my 91 in order to install a Hughes TC & new flexplate. While I am in here I figure I should do everything I can think of to avoid having to pull the tranny again soon.
1. Should I automatically replace mainseal? I ordered one from cummins figuring I should. It is not leaking, but as far as I know has never been done.
2. I noticed a broken wire while removing the trans. It is a white wire and part of a 3-wire plug on the drivers side of the truck, just below the shifting linkages. Is this the reason my truck will not go into overdrive without the toggle switch fix? What does this plug control?
3. I was thinking of installing a transgo kit, figuring that it might be a nice upgrade with the new TC. I have found a multitude of prices for the TFOD kit I want (from$30-$130) Does anyone have the number of a company who sells these kits and has a real person on the other end of the line that knows the difference? If I knew exactly what I wanted I would just call Summit, but I don't trust Summits operators for tech advice.
4. Anything else I should do while this thing is out? (tranny seal, tranny mods, gold plated muffler bearings, etc)

replacing the main seal is a good idea sence you already have it out, the electical connection below the shift linkage is your park, reverse, neutral saftey switch, controls your back up lights, and wether or not you can start you truck in drive. not sure which one the white wire is to?
as for the shift kit, great idea to do, I've got a place that I get all my parts from, its in idaho, so kind of far but they know what they are talking about, ask for dave, really knowledgable friend. # is 208-378-8183 (idaho transmission warehouse) I am just finishing up a tranny for my brother and used the transgo diesel shift kit.
as far as other up grades you can put in a super servo for the low reverse band, and you can stick a higher ratio 2nd gear apply rocker arm in (will make it shift a little harder
, and will cause less slippage. also turning up line pressure, you can ask dave about how much with a stock tranny, you don't want to blow seals out.
lot more up grades but at that point you would want to rebuild the tranny
also good idea to put an after market tranny cooler on, and make sure you clean the cooler lines out really good

Also be sure and upgrade to the better planets and frictions while you are in there. Dave should know all the answers, good thing he is a Mopar guy too! I'll buy your striaght cut OD gears if you end up changing those out as well.
try dusty hawk www.htstransmissions.com his contact numbers are on the website, very nice fella

Yes replace as much as you can while it's out! Yes on the shift kit SMR makes a very nice well explained kit for a 1st timer. You will see a night/day differance with a new tc and shift kit.
