Traded my spare hx35 for hx40w. Aftermarket compressor wheel?

Seemed like a good deal, so I jumped on it. Very little shaft play. I was wondering what was up with the notches in the compressor wheel. I was told the turbo was upgraded by banks. It has a 16 housing. Is this a super hx-40?? Any input appreciated.

There's 6 blades on the compressor, correct? So no, it's not a Super. The Super had/has a 7-blade wheel. E-bay would be a good place to look for a new wheel, as well as countless vendors, including the DTR store, (probably, I haven't looked....)

Don't know whats with the notches, but I think i'd run it! What size is the exhaust housing? I would be more worried about that then the compressor wheel.

I bought a hx40w off an 8.3 for $100. Had 18cm housing (dont remember what it had for compressor wheel.) I put it on my 91 when i had orginal non i/c engine and with gsk, timing, fuel pin, exhaust, intake, and 4turns on the pump i could hit 45 psi, it had an insane whistle, wouldnt clean up the smoke and made my exhaust note super loud. Btw that 45psi was at 1550*.

Took it by a turbo shop today. Apparently, those notches are from getting debris into the turbo such as sand which ate away the blades.

The 16cm Housing is worth A pretty penny.

Thats a nice setup. 4" Exhaust oultet and it has a 65mm turbine over the HX35's 60mm.

60mm Compressor too

He must have had a K&N Filter... The guy I car pool with had a drop in K&N filter and he's looks the same way... Needless to say he now has a S&B intake.

I put that turbo in and have some mixed opinions. I know it is slightly better flowing since my egt's dropped by 100. Spool up is terrible even when I black out the sky by throwin more fuel. I ended up backing out my afc spring all the way to keep smoke under control. Max boost is about the same as my hx35/16, and under the right load and throttle it whistles loud enough to make someone's ears bleed. I believe this turbo has more potential with a new compressor blade and porting my turbine housing to match my exhaust manifold. Any input on what this turbo should be doing performance wise with a compressor wheel that isnt eaten up? I'm not seeing a significant gain in performance as of now and I want to make sure that spending the 140 for a new wheel and rebalance will be worth it. Thanks for any help, on a side note, any link where i can find out the specs on my turbo compressor based on serial number or other characteristics besides blade count? I have heard that the 6 blade wheel could be either a 56 or a 60 compressor. If its only a 56 I'm not going to waste my time. Thanks all.

The 6 blade wheel turbo's flow about 30% less air than a Super 40 does. Also that one has the wheel pretty well ate up. Boost would take a while to build in its current condition.

Check the wheel size. If it is a 60MM wheel. Just pick up a Super 40 rebuilt cartridge assy and drop it in.

Assy # 4031450
Serial # 03341686

Those are the numbers off my Super 40.

That -30% number is a bit high( LOW? ). An H1C flows ~70% of a Super40.

Thanks for the info on the super hx40. How could I go about finding a rebuilt cartridge and what does the rebuilt cartridge consist of? I'm guessing its the compressor wheel, center, and turbine? Thank you.

Some peoples kids

In the HX40 line of turbo's. The Super 40 flows around 30% more air than a 6 blade HX40. The 8 blade turbo isn't any better. It is still the old style intake wheel. The 7 blade super uses an extended tip wheel.

That means your comparing a H1C to a HX35 in the difference in air flow. In just those two HX40 series turbo's.
