Towing with 5w-30 in the gutbag

So I have read on here a lot about switching over to synthetic motor oil into the getrag instead of gear oil and I was wondering if you can still tow runnin that oil in the tranny? I switched over a couple months ago and mainly just tow my jeep im just concerned that it wont hold up to the heat. I havent installed a temp gauge but Im really thinking about it. How hot do these trannys get? Can a safely tow running synthetic motor oil in it?

I have many 18 wheeler customers that have switched to synthetic engine oil.......with great success. None however, use a 30 wt. All use straight 50 wt.
Straight 30 wt might work for your load....I'd want heavier...and a multi grade is probably not the best choice. JMO

The owners manual calls for 5W30 engine oil. Synthetic is just that much better. Keep in mind the Getrag uses preloaded roller bearings buried in pockets and is splash lubed, the oil needs to be thin enough to get there. The critical thing is the 1 quart overfill with what ever oil you use.

As brainfade stated.... use synthetic works great

I tow a 24' travel trailer all over with a pair of ATV's on the bed. The getrag is quiet (relatively) and shifts well. I do not think you have much to worry about with your load sounds like fun anyway.

IIRC, synthetic is more resistant to heat induced breakdown of the oil than standard oil is, thus it is better in a heavier set-up. Most anybody who tells you to use anything more than a 5w-30 is used to working with NV4500's where a heavier oil is recommended for hauling heavy.

I have a temp gauge but it isn't wired up. I haven't gotten around to figuring out where to install the probe. I'm assuming it is easiest to just install it into one of the pto covers, but I haven't taken the time to do so at this point... a Job for later this summer. I'll let you know what I find out. I have a spare getrag in the garage I will fit it in first...

here's your ticket, add even more oil, the more oil equates to more cooling plus
the added cooling units, and they have a dedicated plug for a probe for a temperature gauge, go to the link:

that is spendy but worth it... the first I've seen. I'd like to plug in my trans temp gauge again... it worked great with my auto but now I'd like to get it going with the Getrag... I am not looking fwd to removing the stock covers, they're stuck on there good...
