Overfilling a Getrag

On the old Gutbag how do you go about overfilling the tranmisson? Fixing to service mine and plan to overfill it by one quart and would like to know how everyone else goes about doing it. How many quarts does it hold and is there a specific weight and/or company of oil people would suggest? Thanks

I dumped the extra quart in the top before putting the stick back on. An 1" elbow in the filler hole might do it, but I plan to hang the two wheels on that side about 6" high to tilt the gearcase and just fill to the hole, ...

Pull out a bolt in the PTO cover. The bolts go all the way through. Use 5 quarts of Royal Purple synchromax. That gets the best results

Arrow Full Synthetic Mobil One 5w-30

I added a 1/2" to 3/4" adapting "STREET ELL" plumbing fitting where the fill-plug was, pointing the ELL up.

I screwed a three-inch nipple into the ELL, and added a pipe-cap for a lid.

I drilled through the lid and welded in a 1/4 rod, for a dipstick.

I cross-hatched the sides of my dipstick, for better oil visibility.

I drained the Getrag and added FOUR quarts of Mobil-One 5W-30 Full-Synthetic.

Then, I set the pipe-cap/dip-stick against the top of the pipe-nipple, to determine ADD-A-QUART on the stick.

Next, I added quart number FIVE, and again marked the stick for FULL.

I filed a notch at FULL and ADD-A-QUART on the dip-stick.

Stock lube capacity for the Getrag is THREE and 1/2 quarts.

.... good one BK, ..I wonder if that can be put in as a "Sticky" as we all get to this eventually except for the ATs.

I'm installing a sight glass in one of the PTO covers. Then I'll just watch as it fills up and take note where the level sits.

I did none of the above

I just added 4 qts Mobile 1 15-50
I have about 250K and it's quiet as a dead mouse.

I do feel insulted by the reference of "GutBag"

I would put a GetRag up against a NV4500 for indurance
I ain't lost my nuts like the NV

Good one, 59FORD . Plus, we can change our oil what, 8 times, for the cost of a single NV4500 Syntorq change? All our nuts and gears are inside the case........

Ditto on the Getrag reference, but I've heard there's a 6-spd Getrag that's more durable. Anyone know of this? I like the idea of another gear for heavy pulling esp in the hills around the Great Lakes, and the stick being "down where it belongs" in top gear.

Corvettes Had 'em

In the years previous to the Dodge/Cummins/Getrag, Corvette used a six-speed Getrag in some models.

I don't know how much truth is in this; but, I have also been told that the five-speed we have shares many parts in common with the six-speed that Corvette used.

I despise anything Corvette, so know very little about them.

Maybe someone more familiar can enlighten us on this.
