Question Torque Converter question?

I am thinking about replaceing my ZF5 speed with a AOD. OK oK I know you guys wont know about that But I want to know Is the autos in your trucks Lock up Converters or None lockup? I can install a AOD with a Non Lockup converter, I just dont know how that will work with the Diesel? any one have a clue? Will it work ok? I know that the tranny will hold 800HP if its beefed up right and I dont ever plan on getting to much more out of the 5.9. Well maybe a set of PODs
Thank You, BB................

It is a NON lockup converter and a very inefficient one at that. In 94, they went to the lockup version (47RE). The transmission may hold 800HP but the TC won't take near that without temps that will tear the whole tranny apart. Highest HP I know of anyone holding witht he stock converter is 334 RWHP by HDM48. He has done some other mods to his tranny to help out though.

No lockup, no overdrive, lousy fuel milage, and no torque above 60 mph. I really wish our dodge had a zf 5 speed instead.

The later 1st gens had a non lockup with overdrive which would be closer to what you are looking at. I've never driven one of them, so I'll let someone else talk about them.

My 518 is a slushbox for sure. Especially after she has warmed up. That tranny is ALWAYS in overdrive too. Anything above 38 mph is overdrive. Seems alittle strange that one gear handles speeds ranging from 38 to 80 mph. Oh well she has 203 thousand on her and all ive had to replace was the valve body. Hope she holds on with a set of injectors.
