Torque converter....question????
Torque converter....question????
I have 205,000 miles on my 97 2500 SLT 4X4 cummins.

At around 170,000 miles my tranny started slipping. I got it fixed and the bands needed to be replaced. I decided to upgrade the torque converter from the stock one.

Ever since I did this my take off speed is slugish but after about 5-10 MPH it is fine. The tranny is strong and I was surprised that there wasnt a bigger problem with it.

Does anyone know what is causing this slugish take off?

I am 99% sure that he put the right converter in. It hasn't been a major problem since I have put over 30,000 miles on the converter, but I am worried if i start to pull a camper or trailer.
Re:Torque converter....question????
It sounds like you have a "low stall" converter in your truck. The stock Dodge TCs have a stall speed of about 2100 rpms (too high) and most of the aftermarket TCs stall in the 1600 range. Yours may be a little tighter than that (1400?) and that's the bottom lag that you're feeling. Basically, your TC is stalling a little too soon and isn't letting your motor build enough rpm & hp to be smooth. It won't hurt anything, and it can be cured by adding more power

Re:Torque converter....question????
Antknee: If your truck does not smoke at this "sluggish" takeoff you can try and adjust the AFC starwheel some clicks towards the engine. This will allow more fuel (therefore more torque) while under low boost. Note the number of clicks you turned it and stay reasonable with the smoke.

AlpineRAM

Another great person helping me out. Thank you!!!

This forum is great because of people like you......

I'll go to my diesel mechanic and go over it with him....
Re:Torque converter....question????
I do not think that you will need a mechanic to do so. As long as you can identify the injection pump (the critter with the 6 pipes going to the cylinder head ;D ) you can find the AFC housing and the cover too. It is the only 8mm allen plug you will find there. If you open it and look inside you will find a starwheel ( looks like a star and can be turned
) and with a little screwdriver you can turn this wheel towards the engine. You count the clicks and make a note. Start with about 15 clicks. Then put back the plug and go for a ride. If it's still sluggish and does not smoke at all, do some more clicks. If it takes off like a violated simian but reminds you of a Stones song (paint it black) turn it back some clicks.
It will take you about 30 minutes. As long as you note the clicks you can go back to the stock settings if you want.

AlpineRAM

would someone ACTUALLY have a picture of this 8mm plug, I'm assuming, and ya'll know what that gets you, that ya'll are talking about a 8mm ellen wrench in a plug. I'd love to turn mine up to smoke like hell and really **** off the THUMPERS when leaving the redlight, or maybe just the idiots that want to ride at my right fender and then complain at the light because "Yo truck bees too loud fo mees to be hurring my toons" They still have not FINGURED out the universal sign for HOWDY
Re:Torque converter....question????
Banshee, your right and Alpine, I adjusted the AFC and WOW lots more pickup now.

However, even after the nice pickup now in first gear, after it switches to second it lags big time. Banshee is right, I'll just boost the power other ways like Banshee says.

I wanted the new converter, but actually wish I stayed stock.
Don't get me wrong though; The torque kicks in nice now.

The only time I can get faster take off after second is if I manually switch gears(starting from 1st) with my lever. Which is relatively safe as long as I don't miss and skip into a lower gear.

But Alpine, that AFC job helped big time for take off speed. Nice puff of black smoke now. thank you.

Thanks
Re:Torque converter....question????
Antknee: Nice to hear that the AFC trick worked. Now for your 2nd gear problem.... ;D
I think your truck does the upshift a tad too early and bogs down the engine. When you shift by hand you do it right. So I'd go and try to adjust the TV cable a little tighter. The TV (ThrottleValve) cable is going from the pump lever to the tranny. It gets pulled by the lever to tell the tranny how much go pedal you have now. So you can go and adjust it a little tighter and your tranny will do the upshift a little later. Here is a link for adjustment (OK it's for a gasser but since you can find the injection pump now ;D ) ...
HTH

AlpineRAM

Re:Torque converter....question????
YES!!! That's exactly what's happening. She's shifting too early, and when I'm going up a hill (or not even a hill), she's a pig.

Thank you!!!!!! I'll try this new trick.
Re:Torque converter....question????
Just be shure to mark the original position of the cable.
If you adjust it tighter it will downshift earlier and upshift later and firmer. Should take about 10 mins until you've got first results
