Timing Gears helps!

Ive got the timing cover off and the largest gear, (top right) off. Im trying to take the whole timing case off so I can replace all the gaskets and the timing case gasket. But these gears are bein a pain. The biggest gear had threaded holes where you just run bolts in to push the gear off, but this next camshaft gear does not have those, Ive got my puller on it but the puller gets super tight and then starts popping off. Anyone ever had to do this before? My next question is do all the timing gears have to come out to take the case off, its a 93. Any help is appreciated cause Im stuck right now!

You will have to remove the cam or cam gear to get the timing case off. I have seen a write up on it done to a 2nd gen somewhere. It is pretty involved to pull the cam, with the engine in the vehicle. The lifters will fall into to oil pan if you do not hold them up with hose clamps or wooden dowels. Removing and re-installing the cam gear can result in a dislodged rear cam plug. Most say that pulling the engine and turning it upside down and pulling the cam is the fastest/ easiest. Especially in a 1st gen.

I just want the timing case off and I guess you can take the camshaft gear off without having to acually mess with the camshaft?

Yes but it is a very tight fit.

I have the Cummins B series service manual and it says to pull the cam.

Ive done this repair to several of our engines @ work and you do have to pull the camshaft. To do this you have to pull the rocker assemblys and pushrods and then tap wooden dowels into the lifters to hold the lifters up while the camshaft is removed.

pull the cam its only a few hrs work and your running. pull all the push rods out then tap in some 16" long 1/2" dowels lift up the lifter and use tie straps to hold 2 dowels at a time. you will need to pull the 2 bolts at the bottom of the core support.and pry it to the left just enough to get the cam out.........make sure the dowels are in so a lifter wont drop .you can pry up the dowels with pliers after the cam install pretty strait foreword.
