Timing Gear Cover Noise!! what is it?
Timing Gear Cover Noise!! what is it?
I have a '92 1-ton 5 speed that was making a distinctly scary "click-click-click" noise. I ran it without the belt and it still made the same noise. So I thought oooh...no maybe the kdp has come loose. I pulled the timing cover off this evening and found nothing obvious wrong with the timing gears. The KDP is still in place and no chips or wear in the gear teeth. I actually started the engine with the cover off and it was noisy but no distinct click. The engine ran maybe 30 seconds and didnt hardly lube the gears at all... could I have a lube problem to the gears themselves? If not then is it still something else the power steering pump and vacuum pumps (diaphragm type) is still atatched. I just went through them and there were no obvious problems. so that leaves the crankshaft the camshaft, injector pump and oil pump still running up there. Any info or suggestions....maybe never run the truck again without the harmonic balancer again? hehehe Thanks guys.

update...
upon further inspection and running my wife and I tend to believe the noise is coming from the injector pump gear. It does not seem to be running out or have abnormal end play. It does seem to be the thinnest flimsiest gear in the case. I vote for reassembly and running until something breaks. What do you think.

I have that same click click noise and it does sounds like it's from the timing case. I thought maybe it's just noise transfer from the flywheel? I just had my pump rebuilt and it still makes the noise. I think i'm just gonna run it till she breaks as well................
