I just bumped mine up .187. Noticed the difference the first time out. 120deg lower EGT's, smoother throtle response and more "Diesel noise"

I am getting about 425 miles using 3/4's of a tank of fuel i have with tyhe help of a friend retimed mine twice as the dealer never did it properly when the pump was done under warrenty. The first time was to stock setting 1.25mm and the second was to 1.40 and have towed with no problems you really do need to check the timing just for the sake of knowing so you don't have to baby it

How do you know what is too far for us back yard types. Mine doesnt pop when cold, but when you walk around the front at any given idle time, you do hear more rattle than before, while cruising at 70mph, i dont seem to hear it. So I take it I dont have it too much?

So if I advance the pump it will raise the EGT when pulling the trailer on long hills?

You have that backwards. Advancing the timing will lower EGT.

How can you be sure yours is at the stock setting before you try advancing?
