Unhappy Ticking loud an hard!!

MY engine stated ticking all at once an shaking, My valves were do for a good going over. So I set them at 8 an 18. I got in a hurry . At first they sounded great but the next day it started ticking and got louder then before an the motor still shakes. So I pulled the valve covers an checked them all again There were 3 ex vavles tite I could not get 18 under them . The ticking is not so bad now but sounds like it did before I started an still shakes. So I checked for ex leaks there were none, an injector temp by feel the all where close, My oil pressure is good, changed fuel filter and my egts are staying the same. Whats is going on here Im going to pop test my injectors after work tomorrow. If that dose nothing than I dont know Maybe the IP pump or a stoped up injector

This the same truck you dropped the dowel pin in? Could there be other damage from that event that you didn't catch? You had to replace the cam right?

i don't know what the piston to valve clearance is on these motors, but if you had em too tight then did a higher rpm run it may have made contact. worst case should just be a bent pushrod or a possible broken spring. just keep checking the valve clearances, if it keeps changing, check for bent or broke pieces.

Set them at 10 and 20,,, From what i have heard if you have a collision between the piston and the valve, you will bend a pushrod first, Not too hard to check, But be careful when you pull the rocker block, there is an oiler in there, that you must be careful with!
Look at the pushrod ends, and roll em on a glass table to check for straightness!

I second the notion to set at .010 and .020, at least til you get the ticking figured out. I didnt gain much by going to .009 and .019, but I'll leave them there for now.

It could be an injector. A bad injector can mimick a loose valve very easily.

A bad injector can sound like a wrench in the bore.

I found the problem the # 5 hole had a worn out rocker arm. The ex valve was running to loose! thank god for that!

That's odd. I've seen the c-clip break so the rocker floats around on the shaft, but I haven't seen one wear out. You might want to pull the bridge off and make sure the oil passage is clear.

I'm still curious about that rocker arm. Was it wore out where it fits on to the shaft or was it wore where it pushes on the valve stem or somewhere else?

I wonder because I have a tractor I need to fix where the rocker arms have grooves worn in where they push on the valve stems. I'm hoping that I can grind the rocker arm ends back to "sort of" round.
