Tick . Tick . Tick - The Getrag Time Bomb
Well, I think that it's time to get serious about rebuilding that spare Getrag and getting it in the truck. The one in the truck is now dropping out of first and fifth whenever the gears are unloaded and it's been making noise in 5th for over a year and a half so I won't complain. Time to search out where you guys have been getting the good deals on rebuild parts. I know that the input shaft on the spare Getrag has better than 0.25" lateral movement. I think that might be a bit out of spec. Probably need all new bearings plus who knows what else.

FWIW, I've heard shift forks have a lot of influence on the whole popping out of gear thing. When I built mine, I used all new bearings, thrust washers and input shaft. It will still pop out of fifth coasting downhill...some folks with tired old trannys just replcaed the forks and fixed the gear pop-out and kept right on running the noisy tranny...

I just had one completely over-hauled.
All the parts came from somewhere in Oklahoma.
Complete bearing, seal, gasket, synchronizer kit was around $225.
A new fork was about $75.
Parts, labor, and a new speedometer gear was $575.
I don't know the name or location of the parts source; but I do remember him saying that they found and ordered them from Oklahoma.

The worn shift forks thing is common. It's caused by drivers resting their hand on the shift lever when driving. When it gets worn it allows the synchronizer to bounce back and forth until it pushes the lever out of gear.
Old 3 speed column shifters were bad about this because of the driver laying his hand on the shifter.
