Are there 2 styles of brake systems on 1st gens?

By that I don't mean Chrysler Vs Bendix style calipers or the 11 or 12 inch rear drums.
My question is, did dodge ever offer, or switch to a proportioning valve setup instead of the combination valve system?

The reason I ask is because my truck had a prop. valve setup on it and after digging through my FSM and it telling me (Quote) A combination valve is used on all models. (/Quote) I ripped the prop valve off and ordered me a new combination valve. But what threw me for a loop is just the other day I was digging through the photo galleries here and I noticed that a few of the trucks had what appeared to be the same prop valve set up as mine does/did.

What gives? Did Ma Mopar sneak one by me here, or am I missing something?

Thanks all

The combination valve is a proportioning valve. Dodge calls it a combination valve because it combines the proportioning valve with a metering valve and a sender to light up the brake light in the dash. The combination valve looks exactly like most proportioning valves that I have seen. A proportioning valve is used on any vehicle that has a disc drum combination, because their braking properties are so different. This prevents spinout...Mark

I know lots of guys with their 1st gen trucks, 91.5-93, have problems with their brakes not working right. I think it has a lot to do with the ABS system that they were running.

All I know is that the old brake system on ol' RAE works great...I hammer the brakes and the pedal is hard and grinds the truck to a stop. I will take my older, pre-ABS system any day over the more modern systems.

Yup, I understand that Mark. But my proportioning valve was a stand alone unit.

Lemme show ya what I mean.

Top one is the "Combination Valve" I ordered from WeRMopar.com Bottom one is the "Proportioning valve" I took off.

Now Here's a pic of (I Think Wanna's truck) which clearly shows what I'm calling a proportioning valve. I know his is a D350 and mine is a W250, but according to my FSM that shouldn't make a difference.......should it?

Now, Here's a pic from rbrettctd showing NO proportioning valve, looks to me like it's going straight out of the Master Cylinder to the Combo valve. No?

On my 90, you cannot see the valve, it is tucked up inside the frame rail, down next to the starter. I think that the later trucks have it in a different place, from what I read, Ill take a pic if I can get a good 1...Mark

Yup, I kinda know what you mean, there's 'Drawings' of it in my FSM. So that tells me it's the combination valve. But at this point I don't know!
For what it's worth the combo valve is a cast steel unit with all necessary ports, threads etc machined in.
The "Proportioning valve" is a Billet aluminum piece, with again, machined ports etc.

Thanks

Mark, Thanks a lot for the pic!

As far as it being right, it should be. WeRmopar makes you select Year, Make, and Model before you get into specific parts. So, as long as they've got their stuff together then this should be right for a '92 as well........I think?!?!?!

Thanks!

Murf

BTW, Here's what I ordered. PRESSURE METERING VALVE, All Models, 4WD
90-92

No problem, I read somewhere on the forum that they are placed in a different location, with a different mount, but is the same valve. Don't remember the years. You should be able to see where the mount studs go through he frame and maybe fab one up...Mark

Im trying to mount one the cast steel prop valves that a dismantler sent me into a truck that has one of those billet aluminum valves (with crossed threads) under the MC. my question is is it ok to mount it laying on its side instead of how it was originally oriented in the truck. This would be easiest for me because i could just bolt it to the frame.
