Temperatures too hot!!

I've been towing my 28' TT up the mountains the past couple weekends and my engine temps have been getting up to 210deg on the steeper hills. The first trip I didn't have a fan shroud, so I found a shroud and installed it before this last weekend. Well the shroud really didn't do much for me. Before this last trip I also reduced the timing to right at 1/8". This also didn't do anything.

My egt's are also pretty hot, right now I have my 16cm housing installed, on these steep hills I can only use about 20lbs of boost or my egt's go way high if I try to give it anymore fuel they go up and then about half way up the hill I have to back out and drop to 3rd to keep the egt's down.

So my plan is to flush the coolant and install a new t-stat.

Also eventually port my 12cmw/g housing and reinstall. Also check for boost leaks.

So does anybody have any other suggestions to get this thing cooled down a little more. Also whats the max engine temp you can run for extended periods?

Thanks, Aaron

210 is not a problem, but I wouldn't run over 220.

Putting the timing back up will help some with EGT, but I think you need more air. A stock HX-35 is pushing it with 190's at high altitude. Also, how long has the BHAF been on there? Checking for boost leaks is a good idea too.

Keep the RPM up on the hills, try not to do any hard pulling below 2000 RPM. That should help with all the temps.

same problem

I got the same problem pulling the GN.I didn't have a real problem with EGT.I could hit 1200* but before it did the engine would be at 220*(not using the AC.either)To keep the temp.below 220* I had to drop into 2nd.gear on the longer hills.I was planning on getting a set of 190 injectors but I need to address the heat issue first.Boost was about 28lb. in 3rd.Running empty it rairly gets over180*

Even in traffic with the AC on it never runs much over 180.

So what would you recomend for more air? How about a small set of twins? The BHAF has only been on there since late last summer, less than 5k miles.

Yeah I always keep the rpms up when I hit the hills, i've been trying to shift early enough to try and keep the egt's down but they still go over 1200 before the top of the hill.

I guess I must not be doing too bad, i've only gotten passed by 1 duramax pulling anything bigger than my trailer.

And I bet he didn't have gauges to tell him the pistons were melting

You really don't have the fuel for twins. I don't think a bigger single is a good answer for you though because of your altitude. You're going to have to compromise either good spool-up or EGT, at high altitude it's hard to get both. If you like the spoolup you have now, I think your best option is to get the Stage III kit and live with whatever the EGT's turn out to be.

If he had the money he could always produce more fuel, it would really only take about an hour. Something like a hx-35 and the HTB3 are usually good towing twins. You could probably have your pump maxed out on fueling and still not be able to get it hot. But then again twins aren't too cheap

I really do like the spool I have now so I was thinking might just have to get water injection. I'd really like to get my water temps down though so I am going to see what I can do for that first.
