tachometer 1991.5

Okay I want to add a tach. I want to spend the least amount of dollars. What do I need to get. Do I need the one with the alternator pickup or not. My truck is a 1991.5

Wait a second... I thought that the 1991's had hook-ups underneath the dash for a tachometer?

What year did those start?

'92 was the first year with a crank sensor.

So with a 92 you can hookup a standard tachometer?

I've been looking into an el cheapo junkyard tach setup. Homemade crank trigger etc. I don't know iff it will work yet.

At this point I'm not spending $100 for a tach

I bought my tach from : www.surpluscenter.com. It is similar to this only 4000RPM model:
http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...atname=engines They also have a 5000 RPM model available. I had a local alternator shop add an output wire when I had my alternator rebuilt, but the wiring is pretty simple and can be done easily at home.

HA ha, I'm so cheap!

Those are some truly wonderful links. It looks like I can have a tach for less than 25 bucks. I could do it for less if I found a VW diesel tach in the pick and pull.

You have to have a tach designed to run off the alternator output. It only requires the removal of the rear cover of the alt. and adding 1 wire.
