Tachometer for 1990 Diesel ?
Tachometer for 1990 Diesel ?
I've read a bunch of posts on this board, still wondering where I can get a tach signal on this vehicle ? I've read that you can tap the alternator for this signal- any suggestions?
Re:Tachometer for 1990 Diesel ?
For your year you will have to go the alternator route.. The engines in the 89 - 91 years did not have crank triggers for a tachometer. I had an alternator tach in my 89 and it worked great, you just have to calibrate it off the start with some engine tach off of the injectors or the like.

Isspro makes a good unit, you may have to call a few diesel shops for some other units.

J-eh
Re:Tachometer for 1990 Diesel ?
I am running a tach from the isspro sending unit kit, without the magnets glued to the crank. If you bend the bracket so that the sensor is almost brushing the damper, it will generate a signal from the notches in the damper. It works great.

The previous owner had installed the tach, and the magnets came off at some point.

I have a 3 1/8' tach that I am planning on mounting someday -- easier to read, and frees up a space in the pod for a fuel pressure gauge, which is how I like to change my fuel filters.
Re:Tachometer for 1990 Diesel ?
I went withan Isspro tach on my early 91 and took the signal from the alternator as Lil Dog suggested....as a matter of fact it was his instructions that guided me thru it. It was really a piece of cake.
I'll be glad to pass those instructions along if you decide to go that way. Just let me know.
Jay
