Swaping Heater & A/C Controls and Stereo Locations

I've done lots of searches, but haven't found the right thread yet (I know it's out there).

Has anyone relocated the heater and A/C controls to the OEM stereo location, also replacing and condensing the "Cummins" message center with LEDS (like people have done to make room for gauges, so that a double DIN DVD receiver can be installed in the orginal location of the message center an climate controls?

I want a double-sized DVD receiver primarily for it's larger video screen so that it can be used with a backup camera, and I'd like it higher up so that I can see it well. There's some pretty good deals on Electronics right now, but I don't want to buy a double-sized unit, only to find out te moving the heater and A/C controls is a show stopper.

Any input (and photos) would be much appreciated.

I agree - a good idea, but haven't done it. I've thought about building a custom dash panel that's in 2 parts with aftermarket gauges that would be a whole lot easy to take apart. It would be nice to have the stereo in the message center location so that's it's not so far out of view, but I don't remember if there's enough depth to install it there. By the time I get to the dash on my crew project I'll probably be in a hurry just to get it back on the road!

I've been toying with the idea of dumping my stereo and putting a 3 gauge pack in there. I never listen to the radio anyway...I only have it for the time display.

But to answer your question...somewhat...I don't think you would have any problems moving the temp control down to the original stereo location. Since most of the wiring and vacuum lines run "up" to the stock location. The only thing I can think of that might cause an issue would be the cable that runs from the temp control to the heater box. You might have to rig up a longer cable, or re-route it behind the glove box?

The A/C ducting is dead smack in the way. I tried moving the radio up to where the Message center is stock.....

Probably is the A/C duct. If you have a NOn A/C truck it can probably be done.

I ran led's in parallel with the message center lights, so it is tucked back in behind the dash and I just have a few leds around my gauges to show the same thing.

I was looking at doing a double din as well, but I just don't think your going to have the depth needed to get one in there without taking out or modifying the a/c ducts. So I just stuck my gauges there since they do fit.

Refreshing an ancient thread do you have to extend the wiring for the A/C and heater controls to be moved to old stereo location?

My build is far from done, but this is the custom dash I built. The gauge and control panels are not installed yet.

Nice to see a picture of your project, DISLSMOKE.
Looking good. Is that some shade of orange I see as the paint color?
