?? Stout 727 or Stout 518 ??

I have to rebuild my trans and wanted to get some opinions. I currently have a 727 in the truck but I also have a 518 sitting. I would like to have overdrive but it is not necessary plus I just cant afford to build a 47rh at this time. I believe that a 727 would hold up better then the 518 but I figured I would leave it up to the consensus. I am going to get a good converter and what ever I will need to do to build the strongest out of the 2 transmission.

All of your opinions are greatly appreciated and I thank you. Also beside your post please vote in the poll but just let me know how and why you voted.

And before any one says go to a 5 speed I did think about it but I enjoy being in traffic and not havting to shift.

Also If you have rebuilt either one please let me know what you did, where you got your parts from and how much the rebuild cost you if you don't mind, it will help me make my final decision.

Again THANK YOU

I like overdrive so much, I have two of them (5th gear plus a Gear Vendors). It's real nice doing 75MPH at about 2000 RPM.

You can build a 727 to withstand ANYTHING. think about it. Mopar put them behind 426 hemi's? And it will be alot CHEAPER im sure than building a 518. Plus the 727 is bolt in to your old 727,no TPS and wiring involved like if you did a 518 swap . 727 Is my vote

David I did read over your post probably 3 times now but I was concerned about the amount of abuse the 518 could take. I have heard they are not very strong. Have you had any issues with yours and the power your putting to it.

The OD wiring is not really a concern for me. I was just going to run it off of a toggle switch no TPS or computer needed that way.

At the moment, I'm putting right at 400 hp through it. Launching in four wheel drive, my 60' times are 1.8 seconds (6400lbs). 8.78 in the 8th mile, 13.95 in the quarter.

I've not had any problems with mine thus far.

(Knock on wood)

The last I heard, the A518 is a 727 with an OD unit nailed to it. In rebuilding my mess, it became quite apparent that most of the 727 parts were interchangable with the A518.

The front half of the 518 is a 727, the rear is where they differ. The 47RH is really no more money to build.

I agree not more money to build but the lock-up converter, trans adapter plate starter and so on is the money that I really don't have to spare.

The OD is gonna be worth the added effort required. With minimal additional $$'s you may as well have the extra gear.

Since you have the 518 out, rebuild it. So a search for txs, I remember him saying he built a 727 or A518 with 47RE parts. The only thing that was custom on it was the front input shaft. It was a dummy L/U shaft that he had built.

518's will handle more abuse than most would think...
