The story so far: 1990 D250 5.9 Cummins

Greetings. I'm posting this for those who are new (like me), as I go thru the process of getting this thing to run right. I think you'll see many of the same problems. The gentlemen on this forum are pretty durn knowledgeable and helpful. However, they assume you have basic knowledge of the Cummins and you may not. Your brand new Haynes and Chilton's manuals are useless and don't contain the info you need. Spending hours of web and forum searching will show you pics of stuff that doesn't apply. If you have this truck, I'll assume you don't know anything and go from there. If I can save one guy 5 minutes of putzing around outside in the winter, it's worth it.

The first thing I did was check and clean battery connections. But I forgot connection number 1. This will keep you from starting and the truck is dead. Number 2 shows connectors for the fusible links. They are probably crappy and corroded, so just replace them.

Great start, but what's a Cummins? I am so confused Just kidding, when I first started I didn't know what a kdp was, now I are one...Mark

Then it died

Got it going, all looked good, and it died while driving, with oil idiot light on. Members suggested checking Fuel Shutoff Solenoid wire. Ummm... I'll save you a bit of searching. Here it is. After you clean all the crap off it, you'll probably want to put on some dielectric grease. Or put on a ring terminal. Or just solder it to the FSS. Whatever. Just make it bomb-proof.

So I got a little desperate...

And hired a mobile diesel mechanic. He cracked and bled the injectors, one by one, until it fired. He also found a fuel leak out of the fuel filter. To bleed an injector, you just loosen the nut and put a rag around it so fuel won't shoot everywhere, and crank the truck a little until fuel comes out. Hooray! It runs! Seems to start fine, after several attempts. He suggested I disconnect that black connector shown earlier, to take the battery out of the circuit.

Then I changed the fuel filter...

Apparently this truck was built at a time when it was MANDATORY that the exact location of the fuel filter be kept TOP SECRET. I had looked for it, but never saw it until Mr. Mobile Mechanic was kind enough to point it out. You can just see it peeking thru the linkage. I have tried to show the direction of travel you will take, coming in from the underside, to get to it. Get yourself something to stand on as you will be laying on top of the engine, reaching around underneath to get to this. Be sure you fill up your new filter with fuel before installing, and then prime it. You can just barely see the handle on the primer from this angle. You'll be able to see the whole thing when yer head's next to it ...

That wire you pointed to is not the FSS wire, but the FSS itself is hidden behind that wire.
