No worries brother,at that moment I just totally forgot about the 2wd diesels.
I actually struck a deal on a 2wd diesel this morning.I need the a/c and stuff and my buddy wants the engine/tranny for his '72 Chevy.
I'm curious on this topic to see if there's any way dieselmpg can increase his mileage and maybe MINE too.

I also think the area where you drive has a big difference. Although i have never been to KY i would assume it is more flat than here in PA. Driving though hills can make a big difference in millage. I went to the shore this summer (Ocean city Maryland) and got the best millage i have have, 21mpg. No changes to the truck and all i can get is 16-18 mpg here at home. Even driving on parts of I-80 and I-78 here in PA all i can get is 18mpg vs. the 21mpg on the flats down at OC maryland.
I was thinking with only 120K on the tranny, it would still be in pretty good shape, but after re reading his first post it says he "reset" the fuel. The tranny could have also been abused, so I should have been more clear in my statement. It's not too flat here in Ky, but I do see your point, and I agree with it. Driving style and conditions have a lot to do with mileage as well.

With a stock torque convertor, you will get worse MPGs, no question about it. Do you have a tach on your truck? If so, note the difference in RPM from "D" to "OD" at 60mph. Mom's engine drops 50-75rpm, no joke. LOT of power being lost through her convertor. Good shifting is only part of the equation in diesel performance.

That said, with 120K on it, it has done a lot of sitting or light loaded running. Could be injector refresh time- pop pressure and clean up. I had a 93 W350 back in the day that was getting 15mpg empty. Everyone on 350chevyland said that was excellent for a truck that size. I got the injectors cleaned and reset evenly, and I jumped to 19-20mpg. Low miles/ light use doesnt necessarily mean good shape. I imagine it would be the same for your tranny, too.

I'm lucky to get 15 in mine which I think is pretty ...I've done all the right things, timed it, did the valves, turned down the fuel, had my sticks checked, and dont run mudders, and I run with the valet pretty much all the time...I think it comes down to luck of the draw on production day..
