Several years ago I purchased a Larry B's Kit -- intending to rebuild my starter at some point. Then my starter failed without warning on a Sunday when I was 120 miles from home. The local AutoZone had me a Chinese re-manufactured starter for $99 (plus core) by early Monday morning -- with a lifetime warranty. I kept my OEM core (Nippondenso) because I figure I'll eventually rebuild it with the Larry B's Kit, but the AutoZone starter has performed well for three years and I saved the receipt in case I need to claim on that lifetime warranty.

Purchasing a $99 starter with a lifetime warranty is certainly simpler than rebuilding one's own unit...

I would rather do it myself and have the $70 I saved for something else. But that's me.

That was the first thing I did, check and clean the connections. The contacts tn the solenoid on the starter were pretty bad as well as the brushes were due to be replaced.

I didn't price that big starter but I was expecting a couple hundred, not $99!

I think, in the long run, it is better to rebuild the original than take a chance on a replacement that may or may not live up to expectations, IMHO.

According to Larry B's website, his kit is currently $55.60 plus $11.99 for standard shipping -- so the savings would actually be $31.41 rather than $70 (ignoring sales taxes) .

I agree -- which is the reason I retained my core OEM Nippondenso unit (with the intention to later rebuild it myself). But when I broke down 120 miles from home, the cheap reman unit AutoZone sourced for me in less than 12 hours was a convenient alternative. I was pleasantly surprised by the lifetime warranty and am also happy to report that the cheap starter is still working fine almost three years later...

I remember when Checker Auto Parts sold a lifetime warranty battery that was such a poorly made battery it usually failed in a short time and it darn near bankrupted them. I had a friend that got at least 5 of them...Mark
