Starter relay source?

I'm dealing with several different no start issues right now.

For the past year or two about 1/4th of the time the truck won't start on the first try, just turns over. Next key-on it fires right up immediately like a Cummins should. But that info is just FYI and a whole nuther thread.

So now I occasionally get nothing. No click at the solenoid, just clicking at the relay. I jiggle and tap the wires and relay but only get going by whacking the starter. Not had a chance to try shorting the solenoid yet - I'm always wearing office clothes at the time and no testers... So not done the testing yet but suspecting/hoping a faulty relay (meanwhile my starter has 200K on it so I will order LarryB's Dodge Denso Starter EASY rebuild kit 89-93 - Dodge Starter Rebuild Kits - Dodge Starter Parts - Dodge Cummins Diesel LarryB's ) because maybe just the time delay to whack the starter lets the relay decide to relay?

Anyway, what I need is a source/part number for that relay. We looked up the number and by year at NAPA and it shows a paired relay? What's up with that? And on Rockauto it shows a similar one but the housing doesn't match.

Thanks,

It's not the relay, I'm 99 44/100 % sure it's all in the starter.

Yea, that's kinda what my gut is saying. Maybe this weekend I'll get a chance to confirm.

BTW, not forgot about your panels, just need to pull 'em.

I agree that it is probably the starter, but the relay is still available:

You can use a standard 5 pin Tyco relay....you just won't have the outer casing that "clicks" the wiring head in place. I picked up a bunch of the proper replays from the wreckers since Ma Mopar used those formed housing relays on many different makes and models through the late 80's to mid 90's.

Maybe I'm confused about the relay. I'm talking about the middle one of 3 mounted on the driver's fender between the ABS and AC relays. The housing is different from the other 2. Plus it is only 4 pins and looks nothing like those at Advance. Similar to this but keyed different https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...101328&jsn=448

Guess I can poke around the junkyard, didn't think about those being on other models too.

Ordered a Larry B's rebuild kit in the meantime.

I suspected the relay at first on mine but when I changed it out, the same thing happened. Starter would work most of the time then nothing no click nothing. When I bumped it with a hammer it would work again for a while until one day nothing worked and I installed the kit. now it works better than ever. The whole time I suspected a wiring problem or worse a starter.

Those contacts in the solenoid seem to be a common problem. It looks like if you replace them and clean lube the rest the starter is good for another 500K miles.

Well I wouldn't go that far right off the bat.I Put the Larry kit in mine six months ago and it works fine. My bearings and other electrical parts were fine.

A while back I was having trouble with my starter. No clicking, no nothing. I bought the LarryB kit for the solenoid but found the plug to the relay inside the left fender was corroded. I took the relay off and cleaned the contacts as well as the plug and haven't had any trouble with it since. I still have the unused kit as a spare.
