splat, clunk.....BOOM?
I was recently poking around under my truck and spotted what looked like oil around the drive shaft near the front of the fuel tank. It looks like it has come of the driveshaft because of the splatter. I have also noticed a clunk when it shifts (automatic transmission) to second gear under minimal acceleration. Are these things related? I know the clunk can come from bad u-joints, but I have tried twisting the drive shaft by hand and there is no wiggle with the vehicle in park and the brake on. Do I need it in neutral? Is this possibly a transmission or differential problem? And as far as the leak I haven't located the sourc yet, haven't had time to seriously trouble shoot. Thanks in advance for your help

Sounds like the trans output shaft seal on the leak.
Does your truck have a 2 piece driveshaft? The center support bearing on those gets sloppy and can make noise.
To check the u-joints you want the parking brake set (or the wheels chocked) and the trans in neutral.
