Speedometer question
Speedometer question
I have done the search and have a couple of questions. My speedometer bounced around and then quit never to return except for a bounce or two. I took the sensor out of the transfercase and it had resistance at the two pins that go to the speedometer. Everything inside seems to be turning. I turned it over by hand and an electric drill and couldn't get any voltage at the pins. I checked for continuity at the connector to the speedometer and get an open circuit. Is this right?
In on of the posts in the search the mentioned a sensor at the rear. The other problem i have is the abs and brake light have been on for a month or so before the speedometer went south. Could my problem not be the speedometer sensor but the sensor at the rear?
Has anyone had a problem with the gear in the transfer case comming loose? If so can I get to it to tighten it up without takein the drive shaft out?

I was in the process of checking the sensor in the rear. While I was trying to get the connector apart it broke off in the sensor. Maybe the connection was broken and that was putting on the brake and anti lock light. Maybe it has something to do with the speedometer. I hope
My manual isn't really helpful on the diagnosis of the speedo, so what I'm saying is my interpretation of how it has to work by looking at the wiring diagrams. The VSS has to generate its own current because one wire goes to the common sensor ground in the PCM and the other wire goes up to the speedo. That's why you don't get any continuity between those two wires, there's no way you should. I'd replace the VSS if you can't get it to generate current.
The sensor on the rear axle has nothing to do with the speedo, it's strictly for the ABS. That broken connection would explain the idiot lights though.

Well I got both the speedometer and the anti lock are fixed.
At least one of the problems with the anti lock was the short connector from the rear sensor to the main line. One end was broken and the other was corroded. I made a check on the sending unit and it seemed to work so I just replaced the connector.
The speedometer was fixed with the replacement of the end of the sensor, the dino part.
When I started the truck the anitlock light and brake light didn't go out. I took it down the road and the speedometer worked fine but the lights were still on. Not until I put on the brakes to stop at the sign did I hear a thump and the antilock light and brake light went out. I don't know it the speeometer and the antilock are connected or not but there were two problems.
The speedometer sensor at the end of the unit has a shaft that goes into the unit. The shaft is supposed to be square. The shaft was rounded off.
Anyway the fix was pretty easy. The hard part was tracking the problem down. Normal huh?

Thumbs...on the speedo sensor shaft that was rounded off...how did you fix it?
I just took mine apart and we pressed the gear onto another shaft with a new square shaft...but now it just bounces around instead of sitting at 0mph. It even moves when sitting at a stopsign at idle...haha
before i break my wallet and get a new one, i'm considering all options...just curious what you did.
If this rain lets up I'll take it all apart again tomorrow and get some pics of it all...

It was pretty easy. After I found the problem. First I didn't repair it I changed it out. On the end of the sensor where the electric connection is there is a "little generator". It is run by a square shaft exiting the unit and goes into a female end on the rest of the sensor unit. I couldn't repair the shaft so I had to get a new end unit. I hope I am makeing myself clear. Its the part that is being attached to the rest of the sensor with a big nut. The part was about 70 bucks.
If you need more info let me know. I could take a pict of it and send it along if you can't figure out what I am talking about.

Do you have the part numbers? Or pics of the old part?
I'll be taking mine apart tomorrow (if weather permits) and breaking it down and snapping a few pics... I'm thinking when we pressed the gear onto the new shaft that it's slipping on the shaft. Cause the Square-shaped keyway it new and longer than the original...I'm getting a response (or a "pulse" as I call it
) from the speedo, but it's still not working. So I'm thinking it's slipping over the shaft. On the old shaft it was epoxied into the little collar, and was pretty hard to get the broken square shaped keyway out with that epoxy. I might have to try the same thing with Epoxy, or maybe some Solder.
I'd like to have this sorted out by Thursday so that I can have cruise control on my trip to Houston this weekend.

Not exactly the same. The end where the wire goes into is the part I replaced. It may be a little hard to get off because it may have some rust or corrosion in there. I put a little anti seeze on the shaft before I put the new part in.
i am trying to send an attachment of your picture back to you so you see the part I am talking about. That shaft comin out is a square shaft. Mine rounded off causing it to slip in the connection to the rest of the sensor.
You have 2wd right? I think that's why it's a little different. Mine runs off the transfer case not the trans. If that shaft is rounded replace the part. That part looks like mine. The part number I got was 5252438 and it cost 65 bucks.

The piece with the wire connector is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
I've replaced mine long ago. I'm talking about the housing that the VSS mounts to. This housing is what goes to the transmission. I'll get to tinkering with it later today and see if I can come up with any results...

Could you guys keep me posted on how youre fixes turn out? i am haveing an intermittant problem wiht my speedo bouncing around, and the odometer not working. They will go out, hit abump and they start again. I disconnected the VSS harness at the tranny and cleaned it, that solved the speedo problem, but not the odometer problem.
Thumbs, your VSS is on the transfer case? my 4WD is at the tail of the tranny....
different model year change?
On mine, the harness connects into a similar piece to yours, then is connected to a 2 inch rectangular box that is attached to the tranny housing.... I am also having trouble wiht the ABS, but i think my problem is how the guy attached the trailer brake control....

No your unit that holds the VSS doesn't look anything like mine. The one I have is not serviceable. Or at least you would have to drill out the rivets that hold it together.

If the guy screwed up I'm sure he will take care of it. If you want to check the sensor in the rear take it out, put an milliamp meter on the pins, take a piece of metal (I used a wrench) and pass it quickly over the mag pickup. If you get a reading it's working. If you get nothing it's shot. Also check the short connector from the sensor to the main line behind the fuel tank. Just follow the wire to the next connector. Mine was broken on the sensor end and corroded on the other end, That was the reason it didn't work.
