Speedo problems STILL.....grrrrrr!!
Speedo problems STILL.....grrrrrr!!
My speedo still bounces from 0 to??? 60-70 + mph. Checked the VSS, it's tight. Checked the wiring, no cracked, frayed wiring. Hum....
The other symptom is, the 4x4 light on the dash keeps coming on. I stop, pull the 4wd lever back engaging the trans case, I then push it forward to 2wd, the light goes off, a block or two later.... comes back on again! Then it sometimes goes on and off as drive...... grrrrrr!!!
A fellow member had mentioned that the wiring coming from the VSS splits and goes to the 4wd indicator light. I checked the wiring carefully and it all looks good. Is there anything other than the the square drive shaft in the VSS being worn that would cause the symptoms I am suffering?
thanks
David

Dave, the drive shaft that goes into the tranny itself is a square, 'bout 1/8" shaft. this can round off and "catch and release" in the gear that turns it. That would be about the only thing I can think of other than an electrical issue.
With what your describing on the 4X indicator, I'd say you have a bad wire/connector somewhere there.
IF it is the drive shaft, you can:
1) pull it, clean it, and CAREFULLY fill it back in with JB Weld and then file it back to size..
2) place a 7/16" washer under the VSS or gear reducer to "lift" the shaft a little so that a square section is now in the drive gear...
3) replace it( $$$)
I would really recheck your electrical tho.. that 4X indicator lamp is a good sign you do have a problem in there.

That's what I am still thinking....electrical, but my neighbor across the street has a 91 w250 and he says that his light stays on all the time and his speedo works fine..hum, maybe his VSS is ok and he has elec probs and I have both issues.... (shrugs shoulders and --->
)
thanks guys

I haven't had the time to dig into it, the dang turkey got out and I had to chase it cross two counties so's we'd have dinner tomorrow.....
I'll post what I find as soon as I figure out what the prob is.

Dave the final issue with the speedo can be the plastic drive gear that is inside the trans housing. It is about a 2" round plastic gear attached to a hollow shaft that the VSS/Gear Reducer drive slips inside of.
That plastic gear can strip off and start loosing teeth, causing intermittent engagement, resulting in a bouncy speedo or no speedo at all.
I would check everything else first tho, and if you do check the plastic drive gear, count the teeth and keep it for future reference.
These gears can run between $95 and 120 at th dealer....
