special tool needed for turn signal removal?

My niece's car was torched by some local pyros Sunday night. We're scrambling to find something for her to drive to school this weekend. The school is three hours away.
We have an old beater 89 D150 that should get her around but won't win any points for style. The truck belongs to my sister's BF. He's a VW mechanic by trade. He's done some work to the truck to prepare it for use and told me I need to swap the turn signal switch so it will pass inspection. By what he says, I need a special tool to accomplish that.

What do you guys know about them? I assumed it would be accessible once I yanked the steering wheel.

That should be a typical Saginaw column from the eighties, I think. If so, there is a special tool to compress the lockplate so its retaining clip can be removed from the column, to access the signal light switch.

Here's a picture and catalog listing: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

Thanks for the quick response. I think I've got one of those at home.
This whole ordeal has been a nightmare. We're lucky that the truck is available. Without that we'd be sunk.

I made one, very easy. I'll try to find it and take a pic, but it is a piece of flat metal, about 5 inches long, with a hole the size of the steering column and 2 small arms welded on either side of the hole. when it is placed on the column and tightened down, the arms push the plate down, so that the clip can be removed. Here is a really bad drawing:

It looks like this and works really well...Mark
