My truck does it too. Every morning I'll fire it up and it'll smoke like a chimney til engine temps get up there. It'll bang & pop and run like crap if you give it any throttle, so I usually just let it idle for about 2 minutes and then hit the road. After that, the smoke is gone, and she purrrrrs. When it first happened in December I poked around and was told it was the KSB solenoid...

I just "live with it" it ain't no big deal to me.

I cant believe that teh valve guides went out over night. I dont really mind it either but it gets worse the colder it is out, and its only october. I dont want my truck running like crap for 15 min. every morning . I will research up a little on a ksb solenoid.

Bigair (oh, I like your name by the way). I agree with you. If it just happened over night, something went wrong or at least it has been building up but once it got cold, bang. I have 230,000 miles on the truck and I do not blow blue smoke upon startup. It has been getting down to 30 degrees at night and have frost on my windshield. I do let the heating element cycle before trying to start. Truck starts right up and I see some black smoke but I have POD's and that will happen. I lose no oil between my 3500 - 4000 mile oil change either.

I will also get a puff of black smoke right on startup. It will idle clean but if i touch teh throttle it misses and smokes.

Makes me think, again, that you have some sort of fuel pressure problem . . .

Pretty sure it's the KSB Solenoid. Same symptoms as mine. It started doing it in December, when it was in the 20's & 30's (Texas).

Yikes! I'm moving from Michigan to Texas in three weeks. I thought I was leaving the cold weather behind..

On the fuel system issue: my truck started smoking blue/blude-white when it was getting colder outside, it was retarded timing. The other blue smoke/rough running problems I've had with diesels have been caused by air getting into the fuel system on the low-pressure side. Diesels don't like air in the fuel.

NW of Houston. 77065. Whatever that area is called. (cypress??) I have to fly out there this weekend to look at houses, and hopefully buy a truck to drive home. Have to upgrade to a CTD that the wife and three little ones can ride in.

Houston winters arent too bad. I lived there for 3 yrs.

Im originally from Corpus Christi...it's a humid cold there, so 30 degrees feels more like 10 degrees.

There's lots of DTR guys around Houston area, I'm sure you'll make some friend in the area.

It snowed here last winter (Waco) and I freaked out. Never seen that stuff!
