Funny sounds under the hood

I own a 1999 2500 Dodge 24V Turbo Cummins. Sometimes lately when I crank the motor a noise comes from the engine that sounds like a vaccum cleaner or something. When I try to shut her down..she makes a high pitch sound and doesn't shut down normally. I am a new member and could use any help with identifying this noise and how to prevent it from happening. There is 118,000 miles on my truck if that helps. Thank You.

It sounds to me like it is your fan when you start it, and the squeal is the serpentine belt. When your motor stops, your fan keeps spinning a bit. Hence the squeal.

Might be a bad fan clutch.
Does the fan spin freely (with the engine off, of course) by hand when the engine is cold?

hey, could be worse, sometimes after or when I turn my AC on I get a loud bang from somewhere in the engine compartment. Sounds like it's against the firewall or near passenger feet. oh well.

Yes, I can spin the fan but not far. It stops after about 3 inches.

Mine does the same thing every now and then. It's almost sounds like someone smacks the compressor with a hammer. It usually does it the following morning after a long trip or towing.
