I think most guys are just gutting the solenoid so that it acts only to plug the hole in the pump and nothing else. Once the guts are gone, nothing happens in there when you apply voltage--the manual lever runs the show.

On another note, if I have my starter wired straight to a button, what will happen if I remove my starter solenoid?

It's just a spring and plunger--they fall right out. I don't *think* there's anything else up in there---I've never put one back gutted.

With the guts missing, you can't shut down with the key anymore. All else is the same. In fact, there's some speculation as to improved fuel flow with the solenoid plunger removed

What kind of button are you using? Running that kind of current into the cab can be downright dangerous. I think a starter relay/solenoid is required in this instance.
Instead of messing with the column, why not let your push button operate the starter solenoid in the same way the key-switch does.
Just unhook the key-switch wires and hook up the button wires.
