Shutdown Solenoid
Quite simply, the truck would not shut of today. Turned the key back and it sounded like it was running on 3 rather than 6---real rough. Turned the key back on, it ran fine. Back off, running on three. Back on, pulled the manual shutdown and that killed it. It's been fine for the rest of the day--can I clean the solenoid, or do I start shopping? The wire connection is good. Thoughts, comments?

Pull it out and see if there are metal shavings, etc. under it. They tend to get caught there. If you find 'em, clean them out with a magnet and keep your fingers crossed that the pump is not about to die.
It is also possible that the little rubber plunger is just munched up -- if that is the case you'll have to buy a new solenoid, or hook up a manual cable. In some ways the solenoid is better -- it will stop a governor runaway, and the manual lever may not.

The last time I bought one from the dealer, they wanted $180 to put it on the counter.
Well I popped it again the day before yesterday!
Digging around in these forums, I've found that many have been able to cross it over to other vehicles using the same VE pump. I ended up getting one for a '93 Volkswagen Jetta. They called to say it was in today. I hope to pick it up tomorrow.
I'll let you know if it fits/works with the part number.
. . . . . . . . Oh, . . . . . . . it was only $45ish plus tax.

I had put a total of 4 of these puppys on my truck before I gave up and put a cable on it. All 4 of them had a hole blown thru the rubber tip. Luckily enough,I never found any metal shavings
You may have a piece of the tip starting to come off and keeping the pin from seating completely, it doesn't take much of a piece to do this.

Volkswagen part number: 028 130 135 B Cutoff - $45
The parts guy had to have a car to find parts for so I picked a '93 Jetta (same year as my truck). From there we went to the diesel model's fuel injector's parts list (the pictures
). It looked just like what I needed.
Sho'nuf, it works great! I've read where a number of folks who've had the same problem, stretched the spring an additional 1/8" inch and not having the problem again. I've done that with this one . . . . . hope that ends it.

I assume that the jetta Solenoid is from a regular 1.8 not a diesel, because they didn't make a diesel jetta in 93 for the US.
Does the shut down Solenoid have anything to do with starting the truck?

If the wire is off or the solenoid is bad and doesn't open for fuel the truck won't start. It will crank but it won't start. Unhook the wire to test how this works. The "ignition" switch applies power to the solenoid like it applies power to a gassers coil. It doesn't provide a spark though it provides fuel.

1993 Volkswagen Jetta TD (Canada) fuel cut-off solenoid purchased in Raleigh NC, 04/12/05, invoice no: 75059VWR.
I just used my Canadian accent with a fake mustache, works every time.

I'd like a fuel cut-off solenoid for a '93 VW Jetta diesel . . . . . . . . . aye.
