Shock and Leveling Kit Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I recently just got a 1992 w250 first gen Cummins and the shocks are completely gone. The truck is completely stock and I need some recommendations for shocks. The roads I drive on are kind of bumpy and rough. I am also mainly going to regularly drive it and not tow. Also what would be a good leveling kit?

Thanks.

On Project Covid, I used SkyJacker front leaf packs. They offer a 1 and a 2 inch taller, complete spring pack for the front. Make sure to order them for a Cummins truck as the springs are more HD than the normal ones they also offer.

I order Pro Comp ES3000 shocks for my 1st gen builds.

You can add a 1" spacer like this:

And also make an extended shackle (5" or so.)

But I suggest evaluating the condition of your leaf springs, and consider replacing them. Tapered leafs similar to these have served me well.

Another way to go is use a shorter block in the rear to achieve 'level'.

I tried air shocks years ago. They are crappy shocks and only give you an inch or so lift on a truck. Don't waste your time. Get air bags. There is a kit that has frame brackets, leaf spring brackets and bags but it cost about 350. If you can fab or weld you can make brackets and buy bags for 75. You can add a compressor and valves to make it adjustable if you wish. Get Billstien shocks

FWIW, I went from rancho 5000's to Bilsteins and couldn't tell the difference.

Rancho is duel piston and will lose 30% or more the first few bumps you hit because they get air bubbles. Poor design. I used them for years. I noticed BIG difference. You must have a light duty vehicle.

It's a '93 Ram 250 Cummins , with a flat deck and 1ton upgrades. I put Bilsteins in to replace the Ranchos and nothing improved.

I am a big fan of Skyjacker springs. I've run them on 4 trucks so far and have had zero issues.
As far as shocks, I can't tell a difference in any of them. I've used Bilstein, Rancho, Skyjacker, and Summit Racing brand, either Nitro or Hydro. I'm currently running Summit Racing cheapo brand on the RamCharger and my 85 CrewCab. They seem to do the job as well as any of the others.

I guess I need to invest in some front Skyjackers. Doesn't look like I'm ever going to bag the front like I wanted.

I'm not sure I'd notice if my truck had NO shocks...

Mine has overload springs. 2 rick of red oak firewood in the back. It didn't squat at all.

I like these as well but there seems to be a million variables. How do I determine the correct length to order? Stock '91 W250.

Is it as simple as measuring length as sits and subtracting the spring stop to frame distance for collapsed then jack till the tire comes off the ground and measure for extension??

Enquireing minds want to know.

Thank You,
BlueW250

IIRC they had a list of part # for our 1st gen trucks with different lifts on Pro Comps web site.

I also have the part # I used in the shop for Poncho [ 2-3 inch lift], Project Covid [2 inch lift and front axle moved forward I inch] and my 2wd Poptop Ramcharger builds.
