Searching for 1st diesel. (questions)

Hello all. This is my first post, though I have been lurking on this site reading up on some of the topics. Browsing the local classifieds for a rig for a conversion. I have an 85 Crew that will be the recipient. Looking for a 1st gen W series 5 speed. Have all the time in the world, since I currently have a running truck. 85 SRW W350 with a guzzling 360 tbi. What should I look for when I actually check out these trucks? What should I check as far as the axles? (I know about the 61's and shouldn't find them beneath a 5 speed, but will take a BOM guide in case) Things to check on the motor? Transmission? Is there much difference between I/C and non I/C other than a factory I/C? Body and frame isn't a biggie for me since this will primarily be a donor. Feel free to school a newbie.

I'd try to find one w/ 250K or less if you can. Maintenance history is great. Check all the fluids for color etc. Check timing cover for cracks/oil leaks. Oil pan for rust. A clean wiring harness that hasn't been all hacked is a plus. Drive it around, shift it in and out of 4WD etc. Turbo shaft for play. Shift through all 5 gears.

I'd try to get I/C if you can, it's easier to keep EGT's down w I/C.

The 5 speed getrag/transfer case is going to worth darn near what the engine is worth. There are plenty of auto donors out there, 5 speeds are limited.

Check the Timing cover for leaks/cracks as in kdp damage, correct? Forgot about the turbo shaft. Good point. A non I/C can be done with an aftermarket I/C, correct? Found a sweet auto donor for $3K but the 205 would have been 23 spline, plus the front ran the risk of being a 61. Thanks for the replies.
