The Search Begins

Greetings,

I am looking for a 1st Gen W250 4x4 W/5 speed.

Preferably a Club Cab.

I plan on using it as a Daily Driver,so fuel economy is a priority.

It would also be used for Road Trips/Camping and pulling a Jeep.

What would be a good inspection checklist and what potential problems should I look for?

TIA,

Hutch

Hi Hutch, as a coincidence, I'm leaving today to go pick up that exact truck, it's a '92 and has 4.10s to boot! I'm using it for the same reasons you say!! good luck on the search! Check the classifieds on this board, there are a few real interesting ones that I was looking at closely. Watch body rust, cowl cracks, front end problems. I hope you can find what you're looking for. I know I haven't slept too well for the last couple of nights!!

Rust is my nemisis, everything else can be repaired/replaced unless its just flat wore out. You don't say where you're from but salt etc can wear out a frame and the roof rot is something to watch for too as stated above.

There's little things to look at to tell whether its probably stock or been messed with.

For economy you probably don't want the 4.10s.

The Getrag has its issues unless kept overfilled.

What years are you looking for? Intercooled or no?

i like pickups that have the fuel screw collar on and the afc cap untouched. (stock) other than that, look for the front driver side leaf spring mount to be tight, ive seen 2 now that are loose, they can be welded but id drop at leat 300$ if its loose, ow and rust of course, i cant stand rust, usualy if the truck is stock, it hasnt been molested, just wore out

you guys are forgetting the three most important (to me)

Rain gutter on top of cab, LOOK FOR RUST!

Rear leaf spring hangers, LOOK FOR RUST!

Rear main seal on engine, LOOK FOR LEAKS!

Thanx for the replies.

I'm in Arizona.
Carfax enabled and hoping to find a rig that has desert roots.

Looking for a 1989 thru 1993.
Not sure on the I/C.
I'm going to have to search some threads for the pros and cons.

How big a difference in MPG's would the auto vs. 5 speed net.....ballpark WAG?
I actually prefer a driving a 5 speed but auto's seem to be more common.

I'm also kinda liking duallies...probably not a good choice for economy thou... huh? They do look cool, like a mini big rig.

i like pickups that have the fuel screw collar on and the afc cap untouched.

How come?

Thanx again for the replies...keep'm comin.

Hutch

If the pump has been played with. ( fuel turned as well as idle ) Then the engine could be hurt. If you find a engine with all the tamper proof caps in place then most likely the engine is OK. In stock form ( 160 hp and 2600 rpm ) It is real hard to hurt these if you keep oil and coolant in it. For instance on my 93 with 6X16's and a maxed fuel settings I could burn the engine out in less then 5 minutes if I tried. Stock I could hold it wide open all day long.
