screeching noise when i shut it down

this just started the other day.

when i turn the truck off i get this screeching noise. and when in idle there is a squeaking noise. but that goes away when i add some RPM's.

i have changed the belt tensioner, due to that spueaking noise every time i got off the freeway.

has a new belt
a new alternator
and the water pump seems to be fine.

the only thing i can figure is the fan clutch. but it works fine, and dosnt seem to have any play init.

i figure this screeching noise at shut down, and the squeaking noise at idle are the same problem. and the change of the tensioner wasnt te problem.

so any ideas. it getting worse, and i figure it will brake soon enough to figure out what it is, but i would like to fix it before that

thanks, Bob

The screeching noise on shut down is normal. Its the fan as you suspected. Some do it some don't, I would worry about it.

The squeaking noise at idle is usually the belt, mine have done it at some point or another. I shot some belt dressing on it so I wouldn't go crazy sitting in traffic. When you said tensioner you meant the pulley and not the whole tension arm. Right?

Have you pulled the air intake boot and check to see weather the turbo blades are hitting the housing?

Turbo

JD730,

the screeching noise on shut down is more than the normal chirp. and the squeaking at idle is not normal for my truck. it has been sqeak free for the last 100K that i have put on it, so for it to start now leads me to think somthings not right. and i was talking about the tensioner pulley that i replaced.

thanks

G1625S

turbo is all good, i checked that this morning. i would think that would make a heck of a noise though.

thanks Bob.

I suspect that you have got some oil, antifrezze, exc.on you belt and this is how you fix it.....this will sound but try it any was! If the belt is making noise this will fix it!! .....no coffee will not work

Go to the parts store and by some floor dry and put it in a small cup and pore it slowly all over you belt, this will make a mess of floor dry all over you truck but it will dry the belt and all the groves in the pulleys!

You live to far away for that. . Have you pulled the belt off and investigated the fan shaft bearing. Your symptoms are very similar to what I just experienced. The fan bearing is a double row angular seat ball bearing that is sealed. Water gets past the seal and causes problems. The NTN part number is 160506
DF0766LLUACS32 and DFO766LLUACS32/5C
These numbers are the ones on the box. The price here was $54.00, Cummins was twice that. You will need a press to disassemble and reassemble, or a very good vise. The whole job took an hour. Good Luck and I hope you find the squeak.

got her fixed

it was a bad belt tensioner. i had just re-placed about a 2 months ago. well it chewed the belt up some, so the parts store gave me a new one of those, for free. witch was nice. no more screeching at shut down, just the normal chirp, and no more sqeaking noise at idle.

thanks every one.

Have you tried a stethescope to isolate the squeak?

Glad you found it, and am very glad that the parts store stood behind you. The tensioner is a lot easier than a fan bearing.
