Rust
I started more work on the RC, need to find my old thread and get that going. Rust/rust/rust! To get the 4bt into the RC is going to take a lot of work.. I might need to source a donor/junk truck with a standard in it.
I've used bar oil in the past but it seems like that accelerates the rust. Cold galvanized is okay but it flakes off in two years. I wonder if that wax stuff is worth it.

I've been searching some, trying to figure out if there is anything new out there to arrest the ever present rust problem. I'm fixing to deal with the area behind the fuel tank and then some. Looking for the "best solution". Once the tank is back in place it will all be hidden/inaccessible again.
Came across this thread and thought I'd just throw it out there again to see if anyone had any new product testimonies. Seems like all the tried and true ones have those that love it and those that it failed them...

So, I'd not used Chassis Saver yet (I don't think?) so thought I'd look into it. Looking over their website, I found this:
"Q: How long does your paint last?
A: As a general statement regarding the longevity of each of our painting systems:
4800 Series will yield a 2 to 4 year paint job.
9000 Series will yield a 3 to 6 year paint job.
5000 Series will yield a 5 to 10+ year paint job.
Naturally there are many factors that contribute to the life a paint job. Many of our customers come to us after thay have been spending a lot of money for automotive paints. They have come to realize that no matter how much they spend, they are always repainting sooner than they expect. No matter how often they paint, in 2 or 3 years their equipment is looking shabby and is in need of paint again. The amount of abuse that your equipment gets in the field should dictate how much you should spend on paint."
That got me to thinking that maybe I (or we?) had/have unrealistic expectations for underbody rust protection? What seems like I sandblasted, primed & painted a couple years ago is actually many years ago. Many years of mud, salt, brine, manure, weeds, sticks, corn stalks, etc etc. So maybe the Rustoleums, PORs and other concoctions shouldn't have disappointed me or left me searching for new & better.
Anyway, just an old man that woke up too early, musing and thinking till the sun comes up...
And by-the-way, Bannerd, since I revived/highjacked YOUR thread, how about an update on the RC? Or did I miss it in another thread?

I have used Chassis Saver in the past with mixed results. It seems to work the best with a rough, clean surface, ie after sand blasting with Black Beauty. It does not do well on smooth surfaces with remnants of old paint and grease. Also it does best when it is top coated with a good oil based paint.
If you use it, wear gloves and long sleeves and don't get it on your skin. Ask me how I know.

KRB: just haven't had time to work on it as of late. Money is hard to come by these days(building a house still)! I last stopped when the support member fell off completely and the body bushing hit me straight in the forehead. The bolt was rusted clean off.. it needs a lot of work and I'm sure with it sitting on the concrete floor in my barn is not helping it. I do have some big plans with that rig, I need to get the 4bt in there.. I bought an adapter from oliver and some other things so I do need to get back on that thing.
I have been working on a lot of newer VW's in the diesel area and they are sealing the cars with a zinc paint from wurth called ALU ZINC. Once that is cured they go over it with a rubberized coating and on top of that wax. If something whacks the body down to the metal the zinc prevent the spread of rust and eventually the wax should creep during a warm day. Good system.
That seems to work really well, the newer VW's show little to NO sign of rust. Thought I would throw that out there!

Back in 1969 I was working on some runway barriers for Vietnam that had to be jungle proofed. We used a zinc dust primer on them and then covered them with a paint that was rust and fungus proof and cost $54.00 gallon which was a lot back in 69.
