Runaway

I was wondering, we finally got to the point to get the cummins started a couple weeks ago or so and when we first fired it up it wanted to runaway, Pumps only turned up a turn turn and a half, it never ran away before. The motor did sit for about 2-2,1\2 years since the last time fired. We didn't touch anything while it was out it sat on the floor for that amount of time. we tried starting it 3-4 times every time it wanted to run away we was able to shut it down with the key but we didn't let it rev long either. we finally snapped the throttle twice and it came down and has been fine. what would of stuck to hold it wide open if we hadn't messed with anything?? Not that it matters now as it runs really good and it fired up on half a revolution since sitting that long. Thanks

If you let an engine sit for a while the fuel can varnish inside the pump and cause parts to stick which might cause a full fuel situation.

You probably should run some injector cleaner through it. Fill the fuel filter with a mix of 50/50 cleaner and fuel, and pour the rest of the bottle in the tank. That'll clean things up.

Everybody has their favorite way.. Sometime, I'll just dump a whole bottle in a day or two before I fill up. Gives it that strong shot, followed by long term cleaning. Plus, this way you get the cetane boost in your tank.
