Exclamation runaway?

I've been playing with the full fuel screw and I just discovered that I can't maintain certain rpm's with no load. For example, if I slowly apply throttle in neutral to say, 1800 rpm's, no problem, but when I try to hold 21 or 2200, it just keeps on revving to 2500+! I can then back down the throttle to maintain 21-2200, but cannot approach it from lower revs without flying right by. Sooo, I fugured I had turned the screw too far---it was feeling a little flighty between shifts as well. I backed down to my 'baseline' which was about 2/3 turn back. That's where it was when I got it. No more flighty/wanting to rev between gears anymore, but I STILL can't hit and hold 2200 from idle. Is the screw still too far out? Is my pump done in? I haven't just matted it in neutral yet....that spooky feeling of gaining revs while not moving my foot has me too nervous to do that. I think I'm gonna mark my baseline and back the screw out 1-2 turns and then SLOWLY work my way back---what do you think?

Yeah, you better back that thing down some. It should drop right back to idle from full RPM. The pump will be fine, you haven't hurt it.

Thanks for the replies. The thing that's confusing me is that it does drop immediately back to idle, weather at my baseline setting, 3/4 turn in or 1/4 turn out from baseline. It's the mid-throttle 'float' that's got me concerned. Would my afc being mostly bottomed deliver enough fuel, even under no load, to make the revs unstable? Even though rpm's seem to go up without input above 2k, if I let off, it drops right back down to idle...

Mine will do the same thing you described. About 1/4 turn in from where I am at right now and when you are between shifts (manual) it takes alot longer for the RPMs to come down. However, I can hold mine at 2100 and it will go on up. It was explained to me as the flywheights in the pump counter acting to the governor spring. I have been running mine like this close to 75k with no problems.
