Ring and Pinion question

ok guys i got one for ya'll seeing as you guys are the most helpful people i know maybe you guys can help me....a few of you already know but i'm swapping my cummins into an 87 chevy 1 ton....here's my current problem....the 87 chevy has a dana60 front and a 10.5" 14bolt in the rear with 4:56 gears.....my dodge has 3:50 gears...i'm not sure if thats the actual gear ratio or just a rounded figure...seeing as thats what it says under the hood....it may actually be 3:54 or 3:55 maybe one of you can clear that up.....I CANNOT run 4:56 gears! but i want to keep the 14-bolt....i could technically swap the d60 fronts and i would have the 3:50 gears in the front end but what can i do for the 14bolt? i can't seem to find anywhere that sells a 3:50 ring and pinion for a 14bolt....anybody have any helpful info on this? sorry about the long post....

The closest you gonna get with a 14b is 3.42 or a 3.73

Yep, been there. If a 14b FF had 3.55's readily available, my '93 would have one. You could have a set custom made for lots of $$$$.

ok...i don't suppose there is ANY chance that someone actually sells 3:42 gears for the dana 60 front too?.....i'm pretty certain that i have a set of 3:73 in a 1 ton chevy pick up i could swap in and put the 4:56's in that truck but it would just ruin it......and i think 3:73 would be too low anyway,......what gears are you guys running pulling?

I think you'd be ok with 3.73s for towing, if the tranny you have has an OD. No OD, dont go lower than 3.31.

What kind of pulling are you talking about? If truck pulling, stick to the 4.56's.

i'm running a getrag.....the trucks main purpose will be pulling a trailer then hopefully i can make it a sled pulling truck later on.....i don't figure youd want to run 4.56's sled pulling you would have no wheel speed at all....not even gasers run that low of gear ratios most run 4.10 in gassers some run 3.73 but maybe diesels are different i dont know.....anybody know of 3.42 ring and pinioin sets for the 60?

What D60 are you using? Ford high pinion D60 is reverse cut, first gen Dodge D60 is standard cut. I think Chevy D60's are standard as well.

The simplest gear to run would be the 3.73's.

i'm running the chevy d60 which is exactly the same as the dodge....so they must be standard cut.....i was assuming that reverse cut gears were for front axles.....i guess i shouldnt have assumed.....first time buying ring and pinions...lol.....would i be alright with 3.73's? they are looking like my only option..

Yeah, that's the tallest gear available on a 3rd gen and they do just fine.

I know first hand that Dodge front D60 gears will work in a Ford D60 rear, so I assume any D60 standard cut gears will work in your front. Last time I looked there were several new and used sets on ebay. There might be a set of 3.73's for your rear. I am way happy with my 3.54 gears, but I would have used 3.73's if I had not already had the 3.54's for my swap.

If you had a high pinion D60 (F@RD) front axle, it would have reverse cut gears. Basically because the diff is "upside-down". Otherwise you can grab the gears out of about anything with a regular a D60.
