Relative newbie questions...
I am reading a lot throughout the forums, but have a gasser background, not diesel. I opened up the airbox and am waiting to put on exhaust and gauges. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I am having to redo the body first. The "BOMB" bug hit me the first time I read the forum , but the "money" bug is a little bit more elusive. I am looking to do some cheaper mods to start. Will installing the 3200 govenor spring have much effect on stock truck? Also, a friend of mine doesn't recommend turning up the fuel screw without putting in larger injectors. What does everyone think? I don't do much towing (light if any) anf the truck is used mostly for highway and some offroad...sorry for the long explanation!

there you go bud free of charge hope this helps have fun
playing with pump with stock injectors is a little harder on pump imagine trying to blow air true a straw if you get bigger injectors its better but dont worry about it first money thing you got to do is get a pyrometer to watch those egts
The stock injectors on the old non-intercooled trucks are pretty big as it is, no need to replace them until you need more than 280 HP. Even the newer trucks are capable of 250 hp on the stock injectors. Crank that pump up!
Your stock turbine housng isn't too bad. A 16 cm would be just a little quicker spooling up, but you can adjust the pump to spin that 18.5 up pretty fast if you don't mind a little puff after every shift.
The big housings are good for high speed running.
Definitely do the 3200 RPM spring! It makes a huge difference in how the truck drives. The improvement in throttle response is amazing, it would be worth it just for that. The extra 500 RPM in the powerband is icing on the cake.

See my gallery for a look at my setup.
I have no idea if my pump has been tweeked but I had to back off the smoke screw a bunch because it was smoking to much. I kind of get the feeling one of the previous owners has tweaked the pump as it goes quite nicely.
The nice thing about pump tweaks on the VE is they don't affect your fuel mileage unless you like to run at full tilt. Your pedal will put only enough fuel in to maintain cruise speed regardless of pump tweaks. (In most cases. I'm sure there are exceptions.)

Wow...with the last gasser I had I had to put a chip, intake, throttle plate and exhaust, just to get somewhat close to that. To think...my better half actually has to ask what I see in that "big ole' noisy truck!"...
I've heard of this same basic engine doing over 1000hp.
The Cummins engine is very durable and there are more than a few of them with over 1,000,000 miles. Cummins has been making diesel engines for 70+ years. I think they know how.
