Recommended rebuilder for Getrag?

Can anyone recommend a known reputable rebuilder for the Getrag? I had mine rebuilt by a small shop about 3 years ago and it already crapped out! Only put on about 15k easy non towing miles and I know how to baby it and also had the extra qt in it.

I have read about them being sensitive to bearing pre load and I want to find someone with experience building these... Don't really feel like pulling it out again for a long time!

Well that is unfortunate.....that is why I rebuilt my own NV4500 I just don't trust that a shop that is paying it's guy a flat rate for the job is going to take the time to set up the pre-loads properly. It took me several days to set up my pre-load on my counter shaft and mainshaft, and even had to wait a week while I ordered an additional shim pack since I couldn't get the setting right with the pack I removed during dis-assembly.

If you want it done right, do it yourself.

I would second that! What is your current failure with your getrag?

I would prefer to do it myself but the problem is I am at work 600 miles from home! I could probably make time to do it but there would be a learning curve as I have not done it before. I already have it out...

I have lost 3rd gear 90% of the time, almost can't get it in second, pops out of fifth on deceleration, and getting harder and harder to get it in fourth as well. It has been getting worse and worse as time goes by.

I had never done a NV4500 before....but had rebuilt a few older mopar A833 4 spd trannies....so knew a little bit. I was also converting my tranny from 2wd to 4wd so had to do a mainshaft as well. I bought a rebuild manual from Quad 4x4, and then searched and read every thread I could find on-line. Other then having to get a couple bearings removed by a friend at his shop, the rest I did myself just in my small one car garage. Just take your time and read and follow the information out there to the letter and don't settle for "good enough". I have almost 70K km's (about 45K miles) on my rebuild so far...lots of heavy pulling in that time as well.

I got my rebuilt Getrag 360 from Allstate Gear in San Antonio. They made the bearing preload to loose and the trans rattles like the dickins when in neutral. They claimed it was probably the throwout bearing but I had a mechanic listen to it with a steathescope and it isn't the throwout bearing. The noise is the trans and the bearing preload is most likely what causes it.

It works fine however and makes no abnormal noise under load or in gear at a light with the clutch in.

Thanks for the replies. Ended up getting it rebuilt by Southwest Standard Transmission in McGregor TX. They came and picked up the tranny rebuilt it and delivered it back to me within a weeks time for $1250. I have used them years ago for an AX 15 jeep tranny and I haven't had any problems with it so I decided to use them again.

I have since driven the truck about 800 miles and there is no noise and it shifts well. Hopefully it holds up in the long run! Good news is I was able to fix my rear main oil leak while it was out.
